Job Summary
The 16+ Transitions Officer will play a key role in supporting autistic young people as they prepare to leave secondary school and progress into further education, training or employment across Northern Ireland.
Working directly with young people and their families, the postholder will provide person-centred transition planning, practical guidance and emotional support throughout the transition journey. They will work collaboratively with schools, colleges, Education Authority staff and other professionals to help remove barriers and ensure that every young person has the opportunity to achieve positive educational outcomes.
Although previous experience of careers advice and guidance would be beneficial, we recognise that candidates may come from a range of educational, youth work or support backgrounds. Full training and ongoing professional development will be provided.
Responsibilities
Build positive, trusting and respectful relationships with autistic young people and their families.
Deliver person-centred transition support that reflects each young person's strengths, interests, aspirations and support needs.
Help prepare young people for college life through planning visits, transition activities and practical preparation.
Provide information and guidance regarding further education, available supports and post-16 opportunities throughout Northern Ireland.
Liaise effectively with secondary schools, further education colleges, the Education Authority, careers advisers and other agencies involved in transition planning.
Attend review meetings, transition planning meetings and multi-disciplinary meetings where appropriate.
Maintain accurate case records and monitor progress against agreed outcomes.
Promote equality, inclusion, safeguarding and the rights of autistic young people in every aspect of service delivery.
Contribute to the ongoing development of Next Step Transitions' services and resources.
Represent the organisation professionally within schools, colleges, community organisations and networking events.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
A Level 5 qualification (or above) in Education, Psychology, Youth Work, Social Work, Careers Guidance, Health and Social Care or another relevant discipline.
Essential Experience
Experience of supporting young people.
Experience of planning, organising and managing an individual caseload.
Desirable Experience
Experience of careers advice, careers education or guidance.
Experience of supporting young people through transitions into further education, training or employment.
Knowledge of the Further Education sector within Northern Ireland.
Experience of partnership working across education and voluntary sectors.
Essential Knowledge
Understanding of person-centred approaches and strengths-based practice.
Knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities and confidentiality.
Understanding of inclusive practice and equality principles.
Pay: Up to £15.00 per hour
