Overview
A specialist SEMH provision in Preston is recruiting a Life Skills & Independence Mentor to join their team from September. The school supports pupils across Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5 with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs, including trauma-related difficulties, attachment needs, autism spectrum condition, behavioural challenges and barriers to learning.
Working closely with educational staff, pastoral teams and specialist professionals, the successful candidate will play a key role in preparing pupils for adulthood by developing their independence, emotional resilience and everyday life skills. The role focuses on equipping learners with the confidence and practical abilities required for school, home, further education, employment and life beyond the classroom.
This is a full-time opportunity that has the potential to become a permanent role following a successful temporary period.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver targeted life skills and independence support to pupils across Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5.
- Support the implementation of EHCP outcomes, pastoral support plans and personalised development targets.
- Assist pupils in developing essential life skills, including communication, organisation, time management and decision-making.
- Support learners to build confidence, resilience and emotional regulation skills.
- Deliver structured interventions focused on independent living, personal development and preparation for adulthood.
- Facilitate opportunities for pupils to develop teamwork, problem-solving and social interaction skills.
- Use restorative approaches, positive behaviour support and mentoring strategies where appropriate.
- Support pupils during classroom activities, community-based learning and vocational opportunities.
- Monitor, record and evaluate progress against individual targets and preparation-for-adulthood outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, carers and external professionals to ensure consistency across settings.
Pre-requisites:
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND or additional needs.
- Understanding of emotional wellbeing, behaviour support and preparation for adulthood outcomes.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practice, emotional regulation strategies and independent living skills desirable.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Patient, empathetic and highly organised approach.
- Experience within education, youth work, care, mentoring or alternative provision settings beneficial.
- Relevant qualifications in Education, Psychology, Youth Work, Health and Social Care or equivalent experience desirable.
Pay: £95.00-£120.00 per day
