The Night Warehouse Operative is responsible for supporting the efficient and accurate movement, storage, picking and preparation of fish and seafood products during the night shift.
The role involves working within a fast-paced, temperature-controlled warehouse environment to ensure customer orders are picked accurately, stock is handled and rotated correctly, and products are prepared for dispatch in accordance with company procedures, food safety requirements and health and safety standards.
As we handle fresh and frozen fish and seafood products, maintaining product quality, traceability, hygiene and temperature control is an important part of the role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Order Picking and Dispatch
- Pick and prepare customer orders accurately and efficiently in accordance with picking lists, system instructions and operational requirements.
- Check product descriptions, quantities, weights, batch information and other relevant details to ensure order accuracy.
- Prepare, pack, label and organise products for dispatch as required.
- Ensure completed orders are placed in the correct designated areas ready for loading and delivery.
- Report shortages, incorrect products, damaged goods or other order discrepancies promptly to the Night Warehouse Supervisor or relevant manager.
- Support the loading and unloading of vehicles where required and authorised.
Goods Receiving and Stock Control
- Receive, check and correctly store incoming fresh, frozen and ambient products.
- Compare goods received against delivery documentation and report any discrepancies.
- Assist with regular stock counts, stock checks and inventory control activities.
- Ensure stock movements are accurately recorded using the company's warehouse or inventory systems.
- Follow appropriate stock rotation procedures, including FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out) where applicable.
- Ensure products are stored in the correct designated locations and under appropriate temperature conditions.
- Identify and report damaged, incorrectly labelled, out-of-date or otherwise unsuitable stock.
Food Safety, Quality and Traceability
- Follow company food safety, hygiene, allergen and product-handling procedures at all times.
- Maintain product traceability by ensuring labels, batch information and relevant records remain accurate and intact.
- Follow temperature-control requirements when handling chilled and frozen products.
- Immediately report any concerns relating to product quality, contamination, temperature, packaging or food safety.
- Follow all procedures relating to the separation and handling of different products and allergens.
Warehouse Hygiene and Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, tidy and organised warehouse and working area throughout the shift.
- Follow the company's cleaning and hygiene procedures and complete cleaning duties as required.
- Dispose of waste and packaging materials safely and in accordance with company procedures.
- Help ensure walkways, picking areas, cold stores and loading areas remain safe and free from unnecessary obstruction.
- Use and maintain Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
General Responsibilities
- Work closely with colleagues across Warehouse, Production, Transport, Buying and other operational teams to support the smooth running of the night operation.
- Complete required paperwork and system records accurately and on time.
- Assist with stock investigations, audits and discrepancy checks when required.
- Follow reasonable instructions from supervisors and managers to meet operational and customer requirements.
- Support colleagues during busy periods and help ensure night-shift deadlines are achieved.
- Maintain good standards of attendance, punctuality, conduct and teamwork.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and operational needs of the business.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

- Comfortable working night shifts and in chilled and/or frozen environments
Desirable
- Previous experience working in a warehouse, food distribution, food manufacturing or similar environment.
- Previous experience handling fresh or frozen food products, particularly fish and seafood.
- Experience with warehouse management or inventory systems.
- Knowledge of stock rotation, including FIFO and FEFO principles.
- Understanding of food hygiene, food safety and traceability requirements.
- Manual Handling and/or Food Hygiene training.
- Forklift, pallet truck or other relevant warehouse equipment certification or experience.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
This role is based within a food warehouse operation handling fresh and frozen fish and seafood. The role may involve working in chilled and freezer areas, exposure to low temperatures, handling packaged seafood products, manual handling and periods of standing and walking throughout the shift.
Appropriate PPE will be provided in accordance with the requirements of the role and relevant risk assessments.
