Company Overview
We're a fourth-generation, family-run logistics business with over 90 years of history and a reputation for doing things the right way. From our depots across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire we run a fleet of around 70 HGVs and over 100,000 ft² of warehousing, serving customers nationwide with everything from general haulage and pallet distribution to contract logistics and specialist movements.
Innovation and sustainability are at the heart of what we do. We run some of the UK's first 42-tonne electric tractor units, supported by on-site charging infrastructure, and we keep investing in technology, people and greener ways of moving freight. Above all, we're a family business with a friendly, supportive culture, and many of our team have been with us for decades.
Why this role matters
This vacancy is one of several we're recruiting for off the back of continued growth, contract wins and internal promotions across the Group. Transport planning is the heartbeat of our operation. Working in harmony with Customer Service (who validate the jobs and stay close to the customer) and Operations (who support drivers and manage deliveries in real time), Planning builds the plan for the following day, deciding whether each consignment runs on our own fleet, through the pallet networks (Palletline and Hazchem), or via our trusted subcontractor base, a network cemented by over 70 years as the longest-serving member of the Transport Association.
What you'll do
Build and optimise daily and weekly transport plans on our TMS (Qargo), allocating vehicles and drivers in line with WTD, drivers' hours and ADR rules. You'll work side by side with Warehouse, Operations and Customer Service, and with a Workshop team who'll keep you honest about vehicle availability. You'll manage the relationship with our long-standing subcontractors (we don't use online freight exchanges, our network is built on relationships not auctions).
We reward success, salaried staff can earn up to 20% of their salary each quarter through the company profit share system.
What we're looking for
Experience planning a multi-vehicle fleet is preferred, but a sharp problem-solver who likes puzzles will go a long way. You'll need to be confident on a web-based TMS (Qargo or similar), comfortable with UK and EU drivers' hours and compliance rules, and able to communicate calmly with drivers, customers and colleagues when the day's plan starts moving. A genuine interest in sustainable logistics matters to us, the rest we'll train.
If this sounds like the kind of operation you want to plan for, we'd love to hear from you.
