Restaurant Staff – Front of House & Kitchen Assistant
Formosa Izakaya is recruiting for permanent full-time staff at our Birmingham city-centre restaurant.
We currently have opportunities for:
- Front of House / Waiter / Waitress
- Kitchen Assistant
We are particularly interested in applicants with relevant East Asian food, restaurant, hospitality, language or cultural familiarity, as this can be helpful in our working environment and when serving customers.

- These are in-person roles in Birmingham city centre.

Role 1 – Front of House / Waiter / WaitressMain responsibilities
- Welcoming customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Taking food and drink orders accurately.
- Serving food and beverages.
- Explaining dishes, ingredients and menu items where required.
- Clearing and preparing tables.
- Responding politely to customer enquiries.
- Supporting colleagues during busy periods.
- Helping maintain a clean, organised and welcoming restaurant.
- Carrying out other reasonable Front of House duties where required.
Useful experience and skills
- Good customer-service and communication skills.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Confidence working in a busy restaurant environment.
- Previous restaurant or hospitality experience.
- Familiarity with East Asian food, ingredients and dining culture.
- Previous experience in a Chinese, Taiwanese or other East Asian restaurant environment.
- Mandarin Chinese or another relevant East Asian language would be helpful, but is not essential.
Role 2 – Kitchen AssistantMain responsibilities
- Assisting with basic food preparation.
- Supporting chefs and kitchen staff during service.
- Keeping preparation and kitchen areas clean and organised.
- Washing equipment, utensils and other kitchen items where required.
- Helping with stock, ingredients and general kitchen organisation.
- Following food-hygiene and cleanliness requirements.
- Supporting the kitchen team during busy periods.
- Carrying out other reasonable kitchen duties where required.
Useful experience and skills
- Previous kitchen, restaurant or hospitality experience.
- Experience with food preparation.
- Confidence working in a busy kitchen environment.
- Reliability, punctuality and willingness to work as part of a team.
- Familiarity with East Asian ingredients, food preparation or kitchen environments.
- Previous experience in a Chinese, Taiwanese or other East Asian restaurant or kitchen.
- Mandarin Chinese or another relevant East Asian language would be helpful, but is not essential.
East Asian food, language and cultural familiarity
For either role, the following may be particularly useful:
- Familiarity with East Asian food, ingredients and dining culture, including Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or similar cuisines.
- Previous experience working in a Chinese, Taiwanese or other East Asian restaurant or hospitality environment.
- Ability to speak Mandarin Chinese or another relevant East Asian language.
- Understanding of East Asian food, dining customs and restaurant working environments.
- Ability to communicate comfortably with customers and colleagues from different cultural backgrounds.
These are practical skills and experience relevant to the roles. Applicants from all backgrounds are welcome to apply.

However, if your previous CV did not clearly include relevant East Asian language ability, restaurant/kitchen experience, food knowledge or cultural familiarity, you are welcome to update it and bring the revised copy in.
