Job overview: We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our forward-thinking surgical team as a Consultant Laparoscopic General Surgeon with a specialist interest in Upper GI surgery.
This is a dual-site post:
Base and emergency on-call at Glangwili General Hospital
Elective surgical activity at Withybush General Hospital, home to a JAG-accredited Endoscopy Unit
We are seeking a motivated, dynamic consultant who enjoys working in a supportive rural district general hospital setting, delivering high-quality care across a broad range of general surgical conditions.
There is one permanent post available, offered under the Consultant Contract (Wales) with an optional 10-session (37.5 hours) working week.
The successful candidate will:
- Deliver safe, high-quality clinical care across General Surgery, with a focus on Upper GI and laparoscopic surgery
- Participate in the emergency general surgery on-call rota (1:8)
- Undertake elective procedures at Withybush General Hospital, including within a JAG-accredited endoscopy service
- Provide clinical leadership and supervision to junior medical staff
- Contribute to a multidisciplinary team environment, supporting service development and innovation
- Support delivery of RTT and Standard Cancer Pathway (SCP) targets
- Engage in teaching, training and educational supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate learners
- Participate in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives
- Work collaboratively with primary care and community teams to enhance patient pathways
- Maintain continuing professional development and revalidation requirements
Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.
We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services
About you: You will be:
- An experienced General Surgeon with strong laparoscopic skills
- Competent in managing a broad spectrum of general surgery procedures
- Skilled in Upper GI surgery and endoscopy
- Passionate about teaching, mentoring, and service development
- A collaborative team player with excellent leadership and communication skills
- Committed to delivering care in a patient-centred, innovative rural healthcare setting
