Job Description Chef/Cook – Part Time (15 hrs per week)
Purpose Reporting to and under the leadership of the Service Manager at Mary Cole House (MCH) to prepare, cook and serve midday and evening meals to hostel residents and others as necessary and to take charge of all kitchen duties as relating to this
Function To provide nutritious and suitable meals to hostel residents.
Salary Rate 15 hours at £13.45 per hour.
Working Days 2 days per week 10.30am-6.30pm to be confirmed but likely to be one day at weekend and one day during the week eg Friday and Saturday.
Key Tasks
1. Providing a midday meal and an evening meal to 27 hostel residents and others as requested
2. To adhere to Wirral Councils “Safer food, better business” policy
3. To monitor the safety and cleanliness of the kitchen and surrounding areas
4. To order foodstuffs as required and other goods relating to the kitchen operation
5. To liaise with residents as to their requirements particularly around religious, cultural or dietary need
6. To liaise with the Hostel Manager, Key Work and Support staff
7. To work with volunteers and possibly work experience trainees in the kitchen environment
Duties and responsibilities
1. Providing a midday meal and an evening meal to 27 hostel residents and others as requested
1.1 To provide a snack type midday meal to 27 residents and others as required
1.2 To provide a nutritious and good value two course evening meal for 27 residents
1.3 To ensure that all meals provided are of suitable quality and standard.
2. To adhere to Wirral Councils “Safer food, better business” policy
2.1 To follow Wirral Council’s policy as far as is reasonable for this working environment
2.2 To liaise with the Hostel Manager and the Council when implementing this policy.
2.3 To report in the first instance to the Hostel Manager should you have any queries or requirements relating to this policy
3. To monitor the safety and cleanliness of the kitchen and surrounding areas
3.1 To ensure the cleanliness of the kitchen, all white goods, utensils etc and the surrounding areas by adopting a daily, weekly, monthly etc cleaning regime
3.2 To be fully aware of all Health and Safety issues within the kitchen area.
3.3 To ensure all volunteers, trainees etc who work in the kitchen do so in a safe and hygienic manner and ensure suitable training is accessed for all these persons
4. To order foodstuffs as required and other goods relating to the kitchen operation
4.1 To order all foodstuffs as required for meals for the residents.
4.2 Managing stores both donated and purchased
4.3 To source suitable and good quality local suppliers for fresh foods such as meat, fish and vegetables
4.4 To closely monitor waste and to have a waste reduction plan in o
4.5 To liaise with the Hostel Manager to purchase non food items such as kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery
5. To liaise with residents as to their requirements particularly around religious, cultural or dietary need
5.1 Liaising with the Hostel Manager regarding the cultural, religious and dietary requirements of individual clients.
5.2 Liaising with clients around the menu and any specific requirements as above
6. To liaise with the Hostel Manager, Key Work and Support staff
6.1 To liaise with the Hostel Manager and all other staff regarding the care and well being of the residents
6.2 To report any concerns re the residents as soon as possible to the staff on duty and report any ongoing concerns or issues to the Hostel Manager
6.3 To have regular supervisions with the Hostel Manager and to attend training and meetings as and when required
7. To work with volunteers and possibly work experience trainees in the kitchen environment
7.1 To work with volunteers in the kitchen environment and to monitor their safety and well being.
7.2 To work with work experience trainees in the kitchen environment and to monitor their safety and well being
7.3 To assess the training needs of the above and report to the Hostel Manager
Other Duties
The function, duties and responsibilities identified are not necessarily exhaustive or restrictive. Other duties may be further advised by the Hostel Manager which are also commensurate with the post.
