Start Date: September 2026
Subjects: Year 6 English, Maths & Science, plus Mentoring and Reintegration Support
About the Role
Study Mind is seeking an experienced and compassionate Male SEMH Tutor to support a Year 6 student who is currently unable to access school due to significant emotional and behavioural needs linked to bereavement, anxiety and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).
This is much more than an academic tuition role. The successful tutor will become a trusted adult, helping the student rebuild confidence, regulate emotions and gradually re-engage with education ahead of his transition to secondary school.
Alongside delivering engaging Year 6 English, Maths and Science tuition, you will provide mentoring, emotional regulation support and work collaboratively towards a phased reintegration into school.
About the Student
Our student is a bright Year 6 learner who has experienced significant trauma following the loss of both his father and grandmother within recent years.
Although currently working below age-related expectations due to disrupted attendance, he previously worked at expected levels and continues to demonstrate strong academic potential when engaged.
He responds exceptionally well to trusted adults and thrives when learning takes place within a calm, supportive and predictable environment.
Your Role
You will deliver engaging 1:1 home tuition, including:
- Year 6 English
- Year 6 Maths
- Year 6 Science
- Emotional regulation support
- Weekly mentoring sessions
- Reintegration support to prepare for returning to school
- Confidence building and positive relationship development
One session each week should focus primarily on mentoring, emotional wellbeing and reducing barriers to education rather than purely academic learning.
About the Student
The student has experienced:
- Significant bereavement and trauma
- Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
- Emotional dysregulation
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- ADHD (currently being explored/diagnosed)
- Low self-esteem and anxiety
He has developed strong relationships with positive male adults in school and the family is specifically requesting a male tutor who can provide consistency, encouragement and a positive role model.
Student Interests
Building rapport through the student's interests will be essential.
He enjoys:
- Gaming (particularly PlayStation)
- Spending time with friends
- Interactive activities
- Learning when it feels achievable and enjoyable
He is well liked by his peers and has demonstrated that he can flourish academically when he feels emotionally safe.
Teaching Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Prioritise relationship building before academic challenge.
- Deliver structured, predictable sessions.
- Maintain clear boundaries alongside warmth and empathy.
- Use positive reinforcement and strengths-based teaching.
- Break learning into manageable, achievable steps.
- Adapt expectations based on the student's emotional presentation each day.
- Build confidence through regular success.
The tutor should be able to recognise early signs of dysregulation and respond with calm, consistent strategies rather than confrontation.
Reintegration Support
A key aspect of this role is supporting the student's gradual return to education.
You will help:
- Build emotional resilience.
- Develop strategies to manage anxiety.
- Reduce barriers around school attendance.
- Work towards gradual reintegration into Barnes Farm Primary School.
- Support planning for transition into secondary education.
The placement may gradually include sessions within the school environment as confidence develops.
We're Looking For Someone Who Has Experience With
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health)
- Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
- Trauma-informed practice
- ADHD
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Behaviour support
- Emotional regulation
- Reintegration into education
- KS2 English, Maths and Science
Experience supporting children who have experienced bereavement or adverse childhood experiences would be highly desirable.
Essential Requirements
- Male tutor (essential for this placement).
- Experience supporting children with SEMH and challenging behaviour.
- Strong knowledge of the KS2 curriculum.
- Calm, resilient and nurturing approach.
- Ability to build positive, trusting relationships.
