General Manager
Following extensive renovation work, we're looking for someone with drive and energy to relaunch and lead our successful Farmhouse Carvery and a la 'carte food operation in September this year, based in our family dining pub/restaurant at Clyst St Mary, Exeter.
We are looking for a seasoned professional with a strong warm approach to customers and staff, someone to lead by example (not sat in an office)
The successful candidate must have had experience managing a high turnover food led business with a team of 30 plus.
You will be supported by a Duty Management team at a service level and by an Operations Manager and the Owners at a higher level (one team one goal)
The Cat & Fiddle is the one of many pubs owned and operated by a family with over 65 years combined experience in hospitality.
The Cat & Fiddle
Situated in Clyst St Mary on the outskirts of Exeter, the pub is located on the busy A3052, Sidmouth Road, close to Crealy Theme Park & Resort, which is a busy arterial route from J30 of the M5. The business draws from all across Exeter, East Devon and further afield.
It benefits from two large car parks, a new outdoor play area, new indoor play area and new external decking and patio areas.
Restaurant Trade:
With over 200 covers, the business is famous for its Farmhouse Carvery, Homemade Pub Fayre and Chefs specials, served between 12pm - 3pm and then 5pm - 9pm weekdays, then all day on a Sunday.
We have a great reputation for carvery in the area and deliver between 400 and 700 covers on a Sunday, (with a Team that will consist of 9 FOH and 7 BOH for Sundays)
Throughout the pub there are various sections that can be closed off for private occasions, such as wakes (from 25 to 150 guests). These form a large part of our revenue & we usually do several functions per week (mainly buffet with a hot drinks station)
What we are looking for in a General Manager.
Someone who is warm and approachable (requests & doesn't order the team around)
You need to be a lateral thinker, as problem solving is a daily task in hospitality
Strong communication is key
You'll motivate your team (happy teams = happy guests)
Honesty is key (every good business is built on this foundation)
Teamwork comes naturally (You'll role model what great leadership looks like)
Above all you need a great personality and confidence (Success in hospitality is not just prompt service and consistent food, it’s about personality and leaving a lasting impression) Our business is built on this approach and we want to maintain these leadership behaviours.

Salary and Bonuses
The starting salary is £38 – 42k (based on a 5 day working week)
Bonuses are paid every stocktake period (6-8 weeks)
Bonuses are fair, achievable and increase with turnover
Bonus is dependent on several KPI's:
Wet and Dry GP’s in excess of 62%
Labour control of 21% or below (excl. GM salary)
A Kitchen / H&S audit of 80% or more
The bonus scheme is performance related and is designed to be achievable for someone with the right drive and a passion to succeed. You can easily take home and additional £5k and £8k a year.
