Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Fitter’s Mate to join our small specialist team of lift installers covering all Network Rail sites. In this role, you will assist skilled workers performing a range of tasks from basic construction to installing bespoke stainless steel landing entrances and protective guard panels within the lift shafts we require an employee with an energetic approach and commitment to safety that will contribute to efficient project completion and high-quality craftsmanship. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop your skills within a fast-paced construction environment while supporting large-scale infrastructure projects. We wish to take on a self employed subcontractor for an initial short term contract with a view to taking them on full time. We would like to train the operative over time to a standard and ability to work with their own mate with the view of making a career. The job involves travelling to sites covering the entire south of the country from the midlands down, this would mean that the operative would be required to work away overnight possibly all week.
Duties
- Assist steel panel fitters with the installation of Stainless steel entrances, ensuring proper alignment and secure fastening using hand tools and power tools
- Prepare work areas by erecting timber hoardings to segragate the public from the work area,organizing materials, and safety equipment before commencing tasks
- Support with cutting, fabrication of steel components as directed by senior team members
- Follow schematics, safety protocols to ensure accurate installation and compliance with project specifications
- Handle auxiliary tasks such as manual handling of materials, cleaning work sites, and maintaining equipment
- Collaborate effectively with team members to meet project deadlines while maintaining high safety standards
- Support with basic construction painting tasks as needed on-site
Experience
- Prior experience in construction or related trades such as roofing, plumbing, welding, or electrical work is highly desirable
- Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, scaffolding setup, and basic fabrication techniques
- Knowledge of schematics and technical drawings relevant to steel or metal installations
- Experience working with construction materials including plastering compounds or masonry is a plus
- Ability to follow safety procedures diligently and work effectively in physically demanding environments
- Basic understanding of construction processes such as carpentry or masonry enhances versatility on site
