Hours: Multiple posts – full‑time (~36h/week) and part‑time (~24h/week), with flexible patterns (e.g. early mornings, afternoons/evenings, weekends and school holidays).
Pay: £20.80 weekday, £22.80 weekend, £32.20 bank holidays
About the role:
We are building a small, specialist 2:1 care team around a bright, funny, affectionate 7‑year‑old boy with complex needs (autism, cerebral palsy, severe epilepsy, visual impairment, significant learning disability).
He is non‑verbal and communicates through body language, facial expressions, vocalisations, routines, AAC, symbols and the people who know him well. He loves movement, sensory play, music and outdoor space, and thrives with predictable routines and attuned, playful adults.
You’ll provide hands‑on care and support in his family home and local community, working as part of a 2:1 team by day and supporting a 1:1 waking night model.
This is not a passive role: we’re looking for carers who are reliable, warm, emotionally intelligent and genuinely interested in helping him feel safe, regulated and engaged, not just “getting through the routine”.
Shift patterns (you must be able to work across these):
Term time:
- 06:00–10:00 (morning routine and school preparation)
- 14:30–22:00 (after‑school, evening and bedtime)
- 22:00–10:00 (waking night)
Weekends and school holidays:
- 08:00–20:00 (day shifts, 2:1 care)
- 20:00–08:00 (waking night, 1:1 care)
We can offer different patterns within these hours (for example, a part‑time post focused mainly on 06:00–10:00 term‑time mornings, or a full‑time post with more afternoon/evening and weekend/holiday days), but everyone needs some flexibility to support the rota and cover planned leave.
You will:
- Support personal care, continence, scheduled toileting, moving and handling and wheelchair use.
- Help with epilepsy care once trained (seizure recognition, rescue medication, post‑seizure care).
- Use calm, low‑arousal, autism‑informed approaches in transitions, sensory overload, illness and tiredness.
- Engage him in play, movement and sensory activities, at home and in the community.
- On school days, help with practical tasks while he is at school (laundry, preparing meals, setting up activities, organising equipment, notes/handovers, care‑related admin).
- Keep clear, accurate records and contribute to good handovers.
Essential:
- Right to work in the UK with no sponsorship and no restrictions on hours (we cannot offer visa sponsorship or limited‑hours roles).
- Non‑smoker/non‑vaper due to health sensitivities.
- Full UK driving licence (vehicle provided on duty).
- At least one year’s experience supporting children/young people with complex needs in home/community settings, including behaviour that challenges.
- Experience with at least one of: autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, visual impairment or significant learning disability.
- Within roughly one hour’s travel of St John’s Wood
- Good spoken and written English.
Desirable
- Knowledge of AAC, sensory regulation and low‑arousal approaches.
- Experience of paediatric complex care in the home, waking nights, and 2:1 team working.
- Familiarity with developmental, play‑based and movement‑based approaches (e.g. MAES Therapy, Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, sensory‑informed practice).
