Advanced Scaffolder / Scaffolding Department Lead
Northampton | Full-time, permanent
Working across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and other similar localities.
Salary: £20 - £26 ph CIS, reflecting Advanced status and leadership responsibility
Semilong Roofing, part of the Semilong Services Group, is looking for an experienced Advanced Scaffolder to help establish and lead our emerging in-house scaffolding department.
This is a working leadership position. You will not be joining us purely as a supervisor or inspector: you will lead the scaffold gang while remaining personally involved in erecting, altering and dismantling scaffolds for our residential and commercial roofing projects.
When scaffolding work allows, you will also work alongside our roofers and assist with re-roofing projects. We are therefore looking for someone who takes pride in scaffolding as their primary trade but is equally happy to contribute to the wider roofing operation.
As the department develops, you will have the opportunity to shape its working methods, help recruit and train additional operatives, and become Semilong’s lead person for scaffolding operations.
Your responsibilities
You will:
- Lead and work as part of the gang erecting, altering and dismantling scaffolds.
- Plan safe, practical access solutions around the requirements of each roofing project.
- Ensure scaffolds are erected to an appropriate TG20 compliance sheet, manufacturer’s guidance or bespoke design.
- Interpret scaffold designs, drawings and compliance sheets.
- Carry out scaffold handovers and statutory inspections within your demonstrated competence.
- Maintain accurate handover certificates, inspection reports and scaffold-register records.
- Ensure scaffolds are inspected before first use, at least every seven days and following alterations, damage or adverse conditions.
- Coordinate scaffold alterations with the roofing team throughout each project.
- Help prepare site-specific scaffold plans, RAMS, briefings and rescue arrangements with Semilong’s health-and-safety team.
- Identify when a scaffold falls outside a recognised standard configuration and requires input from a competent scaffold designer.
- Manage scaffold materials, equipment records and defect-reporting arrangements.
- Help establish the department’s procedures, equipment requirements and quality standards.
- Support the recruitment, supervision and development of scaffolders, trainees and labourers as the department grows.
- Work professionally around customers’ homes, occupied properties and commercial sites.
- Assist the roofing team with re-roofing work when scaffolding duties allow.
This is a genuinely hands-on role. The successful person must be comfortable moving between leading the scaffold operation, erecting scaffolds and supporting roofing work.
Essential qualifications and experience
You must have:
- A current CISRS Advanced Scaffolder card for the scaffolding system being used.
- A current CISRS Advanced Scaffold Inspection qualification or inspection endorsement covering the intended scaffold structures.
- Strong practical experience erecting, altering and dismantling access scaffolds.
- Experience leading a scaffold gang safely and productively.
- A sound working knowledge of TG20, SG4, the Work at Height Regulations and relevant NASC guidance.
- Experience reading scaffold drawings, designs and compliance sheets.
- The ability to recognise when a bespoke scaffold design is required.
- Experience completing scaffold handovers, inspection reports and registers.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The right to work in the UK.
Roofing experience
Previous roofing experience would be advantageous, particularly in:
- Pitched-roof strip and re-cover work.
- Slate and tile roofing.
- Flat-roofing systems.
- Moving and organising roofing materials.
- Maintaining safe and orderly working areas.
Applicants without extensive roofing experience will still be considered if they are genuinely willing to learn and work as part of the roofing team. Suitable instruction and training will be provided before anyone is expected to undertake unfamiliar roofing work.
Pay: £20.00-£26.00 per hour
