Job Summary
This Financial Controller role is for someone who wants to be close to the action and have real impact. You’ll run the finance function for a handful of ambitious SMEs, working directly with the owners and their teams. Your work will span everything from clean books, sharp management accounts, cash flow forecasting, and the monthly conversation about where the next wins on profit and cash are hiding.
Profit Cash Growth provides fractional finance teams to UK businesses with £1m to £20m turnover, most multi-entity or multi-site, and many growing through acquisition. Our Financial Controller package is the heart of what we do, covering the full operational finance function alongside the strategic input that helps owners make better decisions.
Tech is central to how we work and we use AI every day to handle reconciliations, automate the repetitive stuff, and free the team up for the higher-value work only humans can do. We also build our own tools and apps in-house, designed to make running client finance functions faster, sharper and more enjoyable. It's a fast-moving environment, and the pace is part of what makes the work here fun.
Two things make someone brilliant in this role.
- The first is a genuinely broad technical foundation. Working across multiple clients means seeing everything, from cleaning up a messy trial balance, to complex reconciliations, to knotty VAT, payroll, corporation tax or dividend tax questions. You’ll thrive here if you enjoy variety and have the depth of experience to move across it all confidently.
- The second is the instinct to spot profit and cash wins in the numbers. A tightening in credit control, an opportunity to save costs, or a pricing analysis that reveals margin the client is leaving on the table. These are the small wins a business owner can act on in the next 30 days. If you love spotting what others don’t and turning it into concrete actions , this role is for you. It’s what our clients pay us for, and where the real value we deliver gets created.
The role has three parts.
- You’ll support each client’s in-house bookkeeper on the day-to-day, reviewing their work, coaching them, and picking up transactional work yourself where needed.
- You’ll own the month end, keeping a clean TB with all the adjustments and reconciliations, preparing management accounts, cash flow forecast and any supporting analysis the client needs.
- And each month you’ll lead a client meeting to walk the owner through the numbers and the 1% wins on profit and cash they can act on. That monthly meeting is where the real value we deliver is created.
You’ll also work alongside our FD on the quarterly strategy work we deliver with clients, including budgets, rolling forecasts and the strategic conversation that follows from them, plus project work like acquisitions, due diligence and funding. There’s real scope to develop this side of your work over time and take on more of it directly.
You’ll have real autonomy to run your clients the way you think is right, with the FD and wider team alongside you when you want input. This role is designed to grow with the business. As PCG scales, we envisage this position evolving to include line management responsibility for other team members, with genuine opportunity to shape and play an active part in our growth.
If this sounds like the role you’ve been looking for, we’d love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities:
Finance operations, month end and year end
- Own the month end for each client – keep a clean trial balance with all reconciliations, and adjustments done properly.
- Prepare insightful management accounts and cash flow forecasts that drive the monthly client conversation.
- Prepare VAT returns, payroll, P11d's and other tax submissions as required.
- Support each client's in-house bookkeeper, reviewing their work, coaching them, and picking up transactional work yourself where needed.
- Complete year end statutory accounts and corporation tax returns. We'll support you if prior year end experience is limited.
- Prepare VAT returns, payroll, P11d's and other tax submissions as required.
- Preare the TB for year end statutorya accounts and tax returns.
- Improve finance operations and systems by designing and continuously improving how each client's finance operation runs, from the systems that get data in to the reporting pack that comes out.
Lead the monthly client meeting
- Lead a monthly meeting with each client focused on improving profit and cash. Present the numbers and drive a focused discussion on small gains they can act on in the next 30 days.
- Spot things the client doesn't see in the numbers, whether that's a credit control opportunity, a duplicated cost, a claimable tax or a pricing anomaly, and turn them into concrete actions.
- Help build the discipline of small, consistent improvements month after month.
Senior leadership and FD support
- Act as a senior member of the PCG finance team, providing mentorship and support to other team members on technical queries, client challenges and problem-solving.
- Support the FD on quarterly strategy work (budgets, rolling forecasts and strategic conversations).
- Support on project work including acquisitions, due diligence and funding, taking on more of this directly as your knowledge develops.
About You
You’re a good fit for this role if:
- You’re a qualified accountant with 5+ years of commercial finance experience working with UK SMEs.
- You're comfortable with speed and incomplete information. In a fast-moving client environment, perfection is the enemy of progress. Our clients value decisive action and continuous improvement not perfectionism.
- Your technical foundations are strong across bookkeeping, reconciliations, VAT, payroll, corporation tax and dividend taxes. You’ve handled a wide variety of scenarios and move across them confidently.
- You have an eye for spotting profit and cash wins in the numbers. You can look at a set of accounts and see what a business owner should be doing next, and you’ve got examples of wins you’ve spotted and delivered yourself.
- You’re confident having commercial conversations with small business owners, you can simplify the numbers and make them understandable and actionable.
- You’re tech-fluent and inquisitive about systems. Comfortable in Xero, and quick to pick up new finance tech.
- You’re comfortable coaching and influencing people you don’t line manage.
