As part of proactive medical succession planning, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a full time (10 PAs) Consultant in Integrated Sexual Health with an interest genitourinary medicine.
You will further strengthen service elements within your field of expertise and demonstrate wide experience in sexual health, complementing the expertise currently offered. In association with colleagues, you will play a lead role in developing and facilitating service delivery in the context of the national, regional and local Sexual Health Strategies, driving a model of integrated sexual health to ensure improved access, quality, innovation and productivity.
Sexual Health Services
The Sexual Health Service is commissioned by both North Tyneside and Northumberland Local Authorities to deliver a community-based, open-access, integrated service to our residents, free at the point of delivery and available to everyone regardless of sex, age, ethnic origin, race and sexual orientation. The Service is based on a hub and spoke model to ensure reach across the area. There are two hubs: one in Northumberland, one in N Tyneside, and a range of outreach venues.
We aim to ensure that people are given information and skills needed to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health and successfully address the needs of individual clients in a broad and holistic way.
The principal job purpose is to provide, in conjunction with other consultant colleagues, a comprehensive Sexual Health and GUM service across Northumberland and North Tyneside, ensuring services are safe, caring, responsive, clinically and cost effective, well led and responsive to the changing needs of the population.

Our services are largely delivered by nurses with support from specialist doctors. The Service activity of approximately 39,000 patient contacts annually is achieved by an establishment of 59.14wte staff and a budget of £4,364,940.
Key responsibilities are:
- Delivering Genitourinary Medicine, HIV outpatient and Contraception services for Northumbria Healthcare Sexual Health Service in keeping with competencies and experience.
- Working with professional colleagues and local managers to ensure the efficient running of a high-quality Sexual Health Service.
- Actively contributing to robust, efficient and effective service leadership.
Playing a significant role in ensuring good clinical governance within the Service and leading and participating in audit, research and quality improvement activity.
- Participating in the management of change, ensuring a responsive and flexible service to enable all staff to adapt and contribute fully.
- Providing specialist advice on GUM, contraceptive and sexual health matters to GPs and other medical and non-medical staff, internally and externally.
- Supporting specialist nurses with complex cases and the delivery of the nurse-led, service model.
- Performing vasectomies in clinic with appropriate training if required.
- Contributing to the teaching of medical students, nurses and the provision of education and support to staff in Primary and Secondary Care in order to improve access to sexual health services in these settings.
- Liaising with the Senior Management Team and other members of staff on matters of policy and procedure.
- Playing a lead role in facilitating service delivery and development in the context of national and regional strategies and priorities and contractual obligations.
