Funeral Operative / Funeral Assistant (Full Time)

Hickton Family Funeral Directors are a long-established, independent, family-owned funeral directors, proudly serving our communities since 1909.
We are seeking a full-time Funeral Operative / Assistant to join our close-knit and professional team, this role will have mainly involve working in the mortuary environment.
About the Role
This is a varied and rewarding position, supporting the directors with day-to-day funeral operations. Due to the nature of the role, flexibility is essential as duties may extend beyond standard working hours to meet the needs of the business and the families we serve.
Based at our head office in Cradley Heath, the role will involve regular travel to our branches in Halesowen, Kidderminster, Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting with care and preparation of the deceased
- Bearing and driving on funerals
- Transferring the deceased from place of death and between our premises
- Participating in the out-of-hours on-call rota (approx. 1 week in 5)
- Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of yard and garage areas
- Cleaning and maintaining funeral vehicles (hearses, limousines, ambulances)
- Preparing coffins and caskets
- Delivering documentation to crematoria and branches
- Supporting general operational and maintenance duties
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Smart in appearance with strong communication skills
- Respectful, empathetic and professional at all times
- Physically fit and able to undertake manual handling duties
- Able to work both independently and as part of a team
- Discreet and trustworthy in handling sensitive situations
- Willing to learn and take initiative
Previous experience in the area of the mortuary for dressing and preperation of deceased is preferred or embalming.
Essential Requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Confident driving larger vehicles
- Access to your own vehicle
- Must live within 30 minutes of B64 5AB (at peak times) due to on-call requirements
Working Hours & Benefits
- Standard hours: Monday to Friday, 08:30am – 16:30pm
- Flexibility required – hours will vary in line with the demands of the business
- Participation in out-of-hours rota
- Occasional weekend funerals
- Uniform and workwear provided
- DBS check required
