Nursery Manager
Main Purpose of the Role
The Nursery Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the nursery, ensuring that children receive high-quality care and education in a safe, welcoming and stimulating bilingual environment.
The manager will lead and support the nursery team, maintain compliance with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Ofsted requirements and safeguarding legislation, and build positive relationships with children, parents, staff and outside professionals.
As the nursery provides bilingual Spanish and English education, the successful candidate must be able to speak Spanish confidently.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage the daily operation of the nursery.
- Ensure the nursery meets all EYFS, Ofsted, health and safety, safeguarding and local authority requirements.
- Communicate confidently in both Spanish and English.
- Support children’s development of Spanish and English through daily routines, activities, songs, stories and play.
- Communicate with Spanish-speaking and English-speaking parents and families.
- Provide strong leadership, guidance and support to nursery staff.
- Organise staff rotas and ensure correct staff-to-child ratios are maintained.
- Recruit, induct, supervise and support staff, apprentices and volunteers.
- Complete staff supervisions, appraisals and training plans.
- Monitor staff performance and address any concerns appropriately.
- Ensure children receive high-quality learning opportunities through play and planned activities.
- Oversee observations, assessments, progress reports and individual learning plans.
- Support children with special educational needs and disabilities.
- Work closely with the nursery SENCo, parents and outside professionals.
- Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead or support the DSL in managing safeguarding concerns.
- Ensure all staff understand safeguarding procedures and know how to report concerns.
- Maintain accurate records relating to children, staff, accidents, medication, attendance and safeguarding.
- Manage admissions, registrations, settling-in arrangements and transitions.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and carers.
- Respond to complaints, questions and concerns in a respectful and timely manner.
- Ensure the nursery environment is clean, safe, organised and suitable for children.
- Complete and review risk assessments.
- Manage nursery finances, invoices, funding claims, fees and budgets where required.
- Monitor attendance and follow up unexplained absences.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow data protection requirements.
- Prepare for Ofsted inspections and local authority visits.
- Review and update nursery policies and procedures.
- Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and British values.
- Encourage positive behaviour and support children’s emotional well-being.
- Develop relationships with schools, health visitors, social workers and other professionals.
- Promote the nursery and support the growth of the business.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties connected with the management of the nursery.
Qualifications and Experience
The Nursery Manager should have:
- A recognised Level 3 qualification in Early Years or Childcare as a minimum.
- Relevant experience working within an early years setting.
- Previous leadership, deputy manager or management experience.
- Good knowledge of the EYFS.
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Paediatric First Aid training.
- Designated Safeguarding Lead training or willingness to complete it.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience supporting staff and working with parents.
- An enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
- The ability to speak Spanish and English confidently.
Language Requirement
Spanish and English language skills are essential for this role. The successful candidate must be able to communicate confidently with children, parents and staff in both languages.
