The Contracts Operations Manager will play a pivotal role in the successful delivery and commercial management of our contracted works. This operational management position requires a confident, solutions-focused individual with strong commercial awareness, excellent stakeholder management and proven experience of running multiple contracts to time, cost and quality standards. The post-holder will lead a small team, co-ordinate subcontractors and operatives, and ensure contract performance and compliance with health & safety and client requirements.
Key responsibilities
Manage the day-to-day operational delivery of assigned contracts, ensuring works are completed to programme, budget and specification.
Maintain effective relationships with clients, subcontractors and internal teams to manage expectations, resolve issues and deliver high standards of service.
Prepare, review and submit contract documentation including programmes, method statements, risk assessments, variations and progress reports.
Monitor contract performance and costs, identify commercial risks and opportunities, and support the preparation of commercial claims and cost control measures.
Plan and allocate resources including labour, plant and materials; coordinate scheduling to meet programme milestones and reactive requirements.
Lead, coach and develop direct reports and on-site supervisors to drive consistent quality, productivity and compliance with company standards.
Operate and maintain accurate records in digital systems for job allocation, timesheets, site diaries, handovers and client communications.
Ensure compliance with health & safety legislation, company policies and client requirements; contribute to site inspections, toolbox talks and incident investigations.
Support procurement and subcontractor management activities including tender evaluations, purchase orders and performance reviews.
Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying process improvements and cost‑saving initiatives.
What we are looking for:
Previous experience managing construction or highways contracts in an operational or commercial capacity (typically 3+ years).
Proven track record of delivering contracts on time and to budget with strong commercial awareness.
Good understanding of contract documentation, variations and commercial administration.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing tasks and manage multiple workstreams.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage positively with clients, operatives and subcontractors.
Competent user of digital systems and Microsoft Office; experience with scheduling, CRM or ERP systems desirable.
Knowledge of health & safety requirements, risk assessment and permit-to-work procedures relevant to site activities.
Full UK driving licence (deal‑breaker) and willingness to travel to sites as required.
Professional qualifications or membership (desirable) such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or industry-relevant NVQ/SMSTS.
Organised, resilient and proactive with strong problem-solving skills.
