Artifex Homes is a residential building contractor specialising in high-quality extensions, renovations, loft conversions and new-build homes across Hertfordshire.
We pride ourselves on delivering well-managed, high-quality projects and providing an excellent service to our clients. We have a strong team of trades and are looking for an experienced Working Foreman to take day-to-day responsibility for our residential sites.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced, practical and reliable Working Foreman who can lead a residential construction site while remaining actively involved in the building work.
This is very much a hands-on role. You will be expected to work on the tools alongside the site team while also overseeing the day-to-day running of the project.
You will work closely with the Project Manager, helping ensure that works are completed safely, efficiently, to programme and to the high standard expected by Artifex Homes.
The ideal candidate will have a strong carpentry background, excellent knowledge of residential construction and the confidence to coordinate trades and make sensible day-to-day decisions on site.
Key ResponsibilitiesWorking on the Tools
- Carry out construction work alongside the site team.
- Undertake carpentry/general building duties where required.
- Assist with first and second fix works and general site activities.
- Help resolve practical construction issues as they arise.
- Maintain a high standard of workmanship and set the standard expected from the rest of the team.
Day-to-Day Site Management
- Take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the site.
- Coordinate trades and subcontractors to ensure works progress efficiently.
- Ensure trades understand what work is required and the sequence in which it needs to be completed.
- Keep the Project Manager informed of progress, delays, problems and upcoming requirements.
- Help ensure the project remains on programme.
- Identify potential problems early and raise them with the Project Manager before they affect the programme.
- Coordinate deliveries, materials and site access.
- Ensure materials required for upcoming works are identified in sufficient time.
Quality Control
- Monitor workmanship throughout the project.
- Check work against drawings, specifications and agreed details.
- Ensure Artifex Homes' quality standards are maintained across all trades.
- Identify defective or substandard work and ensure it is corrected promptly.
- Pay particular attention to finishes and details before works are covered up or subsequent trades begin.
Health & Safety
- Help maintain a safe, organised and professional site at all times.
- Ensure site rules and health & safety procedures are followed.
- Ensure appropriate PPE is being used.
- Assist with site inductions, toolbox talks and daily site checks where required.
- Report hazards, incidents or unsafe working practices immediately.
- Ensure the site remains secure and safe for clients, visitors and the workforce.
Client & Professional Conduct
As many of our projects involve clients remaining in or regularly visiting their homes, professionalism is extremely important.
The Working Foreman will:
- Maintain a polite and professional relationship with clients.
- Ensure the site team behaves professionally and respectfully.
- Keep the site as clean, organised and presentable as reasonably possible.
- Direct contractual, cost or variation discussions to the Project Manager rather than agreeing additional works directly with the client.
- Represent Artifex Homes professionally at all times.
Experience & Skills Required
The successful candidate should have:
- Significant experience within residential construction.
- A strong practical trade background, ideally carpentry/joinery or general building.
- Previous experience supervising trades or running residential sites.
- Good knowledge of the construction process from structural works through to finishing.
- Ability to read and understand architectural and construction drawings.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Good organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to plan work ahead and identify potential problems.
- Confidence coordinating different trades.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach to construction.
- Good understanding of site health & safety.
- Full UK driving licence.
This role would suit someone who enjoys being on the tools but is ready to take greater responsibility for running a site.
The Working Foreman will work closely with the Project Manager, who retains overall responsibility for the project, programme, client management and commercial matters.
The Working Foreman's responsibility is to ensure that the site operates effectively on a daily basis: leading the workforce, working alongside the team, maintaining quality and safety, and keeping the Project Manager fully informed of progress and any issues.
This is a self employed position and pay depends on experience.
Pay: £42,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
Experience:
- Carpentry: 5 years (required)
Work Location: On the road
