The Maternal and Infant Health Equity Research Centre (MIHERC) which sits in the Centre for Applied Health and Social Care Research (CARe) at Sheffield Hallam University is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow for the development and delivery of high-quality research within an established programme of work. CARe is part of the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences and contributes to the University’s wider mission to deliver applied research with social impact.

The postholder will undertake independent and collaborative research activities, manage research projects, contribute to publications and funding applications, and engage with academic, clinical, community and policy stakeholders to maximise research impact.

This role supports a research programme funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) within Maternity Disparities Consortium (MDC). The NIHR-MDC is a £50 million NIHR investment which brings together a diverse range of organisations with expertise in research, capacity development and working with people and communities to deliver a step change in maternity outcomes and developing future research leaders in this area of need. The research carried out by the consortium will focus on inequalities before, during and after pregnancy.

The successful candidate will work with the multi-disciplinary team of the NIHR Maternity Disparities Consortium.

This post will support Sheffield Hallam University’s contribution to the NIHR-MDC, specifically in the Perinatal Mental Health and Psychosocial Wellbeing core team within the NIHR-MDC. The post holder will be required to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve the project goals. The study will run across three sites; Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle.

Particularly, the Research Fellow will support a multi-method, multi phased study to use appreciative inquiry for co-production of culturally appropriate interventions and equity informed perinatal mental health and psychosocial wellbeing care pathway. The Research Fellow will contribute to coproduction of interventions with women, families and clinicians, and planning future evaluation of the interventions including usability and feasibility testing, data collection, implementation frameworks, and the generation of evidence to support future scale-up across the consortium.

This project offers an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to work with a broad network of collaborators and contribute to publications, dissemination, further funding development and wider impact activity, while helping shape interventions that are trustworthy, accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of underserved communities.

The University currently enrols eligible academic staff into the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), a defined-benefit pension scheme.

Should you be enrolled into TPS, each year you will earn a secure pension benefit of 1/57th of your salary and the University will pay pension contributions towards the cost of this pension (currently worth about 29% of your salary). For a salary of £40,000, for example, the University would pay just over £11,400 in the first year of your employment and you would earn a pension of £702 p.a. for that year (payable from your State Pension Age).

If you’re a member of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) directly before joining us, you can choose to remain in USS instead.
