Export Control Manager
Location: Osprey Quay, Portland, Dorset

Role Purpose
The Export Control Manager will lead G3 Systems' export control and customs compliance activities, ensuring every international shipment is compliant, controlled and commercially effective.
As G3 Systems' subject matter expert, you will own the governance of UK export controls, customs requirements, commodity classification, export licensing and international trade compliance. Working across Procurement, Commercial, Logistics, Finance and Projects, you will provide clear guidance, robust controls and practical solutions that keep goods moving and projects on track.
You will lead the development and continuous improvement of G3 Systems' export control framework, strengthening processes, reducing customs delays and avoidable costs, and protecting the business from regulatory, financial, contractual and reputational risk.
This is a key role in supporting G3 Systems' international growth, ensuring our global supply chains operate efficiently, compliantly and without unnecessary disruption.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as G3 Systems' subject matter expert for export controls, customs compliance and international trade regulations.
- Classify all products using the correct commodity (HS/Tariff) codes and maintain a central commodity code database.
- Determine and validate country of origin, customs valuation and applicable duties and taxes for all international shipments.
- Ensure compliance with UK export control legislation, sanctions regimes and destination country import regulations.
- Assess licensing requirements for controlled and dual-use goods and manage export licence applications where required.
- Prepare, review and approve export documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin and customs declarations.
- Liaise with freight forwarders, customs brokers, HMRC and overseas customs authorities to resolve import and export issues.
- Provide advice, guidance and training to Procurement, Commercial, Logistics, Project Teams and Finance on export compliance requirements.
- Monitor changes in international trade legislation and communicate relevant business impacts.
- Support project mobilisation activities by identifying export compliance risks at the planning stage.
- Maintain accurate export compliance records to support internal and external audits.
- Identify opportunities to improve customs efficiency, reduce duty exposure and minimise shipment delays.
- Investigate customs issues and implement appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
- Develop, document, implement and maintain export control policies, procedures and standard operating processes in collaboration with Procurement, Commercial, Logistics, Projects and Finance.
- Develop and continuously improve export processes to ensure best practice, regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
- Establish governance controls, approval workflows and compliance checks for all UK export activities.
- Lead cross-functional initiatives to standardise export practices and reduce customs risk across the business.
Qualifications
- Degree, HND or equivalent professional qualification in International Trade, Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, Customs Compliance or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
- Recognised Export Control or Customs Compliance qualification is desirable.
- Membership of the Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT) or equivalent professional body is desirable.
Skills & Experience
Essential Experience
- Demonstrable experience managing the export of goods from the UK to multiple international destinations.
- Strong working knowledge of UK export control legislation, HMRC customs procedures and international trade compliance requirements.
- Experience in determining and maintaining UK Global Tariff (UKGT) commodity codes, customs valuation, rules of origin and preferential trade agreements.
- Experience preparing and reviewing export documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, export declarations, certificates of origin and shipping documentation.
- Sound understanding of UK Customs Declaration Service (CDS) requirements and the movement of goods under UK customs procedures.
- Knowledge of export licensing requirements, including controlled and dual-use goods, and the application of UK sanctions regulations.
- Experience working with freight forwarders, customs brokers and logistics providers to facilitate international shipments and resolve customs issues.
- Strong understanding of Incoterms® 2020 and their commercial and customs implications.
- Experience providing export compliance advice to Procurement, Commercial, Logistics and Project teams.
- Proven ability to interpret UK and international trade legislation and implement compliant business processes.
- Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across multiple business functions.
Desirable Experience
- Experience exporting to Africa, Europe, the Middle East and other international markets.
- Knowledge of temporary exports, ATA Carnets and Returned Goods Relief.
- Experience supporting government, defence, construction or infrastructure projects with international supply chains.
- Familiarity with HMRC audits and customs compliance reviews.
- Experience using ERP systems such as Microsoft Dynamics, SAP or Oracle and customs management software.
- Membership of the Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT) or equivalent professional body.
- Continuous improvement experience, including developing export compliance procedures and training programmes.
Salary, Benefits & Working Arrangements
Salary: Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week, with the working pattern/schedule agreed with the Head of Business Development & Proposals.
Annual Leave: 25 days' annual leave per holiday year (January to December).
