Are you looking for career in Emergency Medicine in a large UK teaching hospital with a Major Trauma Centre?

The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals’ NHS Trust is excited to be able to offer opportunities for motivated doctors to join our friendly Emergency Medicine team from 2nd December 2026 for 12 months.

You will have the opportunity to work in a forward thinking, dynamic department which is committed to the Trust’s ambition of developing staff and delivering outstanding healthcare outcomes for patients.

Depending on your experience and interview, you may be offered a Junior Fellow role on our Tier 2 (CT1/2 level) rota or Tier 3 rota (CT3 level) which would only be considered if you hold MRCEM. We may offer you Senior Fellow at Tier 4 level, which is our registrar rota if you have the required amount of experience in ED plus MRCEM and IAC sign off along with taking into consideration your interview. There will be opportunities for T3 clinicians to progress to the Tier 4 rota, Senior Fellow role, if full MRCEM is obtained and progression reviews completed.

Please note, you must be available to start on 2nd December '26 to align with our Resident doctor rotation which includes an induction to the Trust and a departmental induction on 3rd December which will be mandatory .

Working in our ED encompasses many management skills such as managing the shop floor, keeping to the four hour target and constant reprioritisation of tasks.

You will be supported to work through competencies to develop portfolio evidence to meet your set objectives and will work under the clinical direction of EM Consultants who are present in the department 24/7. All Fellows will have a monthly teaching day along with educational development time reflected on your rota. You will be allocated an Educational and Clinical supervisor

Located in one of the friendliest and greenest cities in the UK, Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) is a Major Trauma Centre and our ED is one of the busiest in Europe, seeing 179,940 new patients a year across co-located adult and Childrens and Young People's departments.

NUH consists of the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) and the Nottingham City Hospital Campuses. QMC houses our Emergency Department which has co-located adult and children’s units. NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands region.

Our forward thinking, research active Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe with 195,000 new attendances annually. The Children’s ED sees 44,000 children and young people and has expanded its resuscitation capability with a major capital investment.

Nottingham is a haven for sports lovers and nature lovers. It is home to two famous football teams, an ice hockey team, an annual tennis open and boasts a test cricket ground and the National Ice and Water Sports Centres. Known for its high quality schools, the city has excellent rail and road links and an ultra-modern bus and tram service. A vibrant university city, the centre has an array of shops, restaurants, clubs and attractions to suit all ages and tastes.

We have clearly set out in our job description and person specification the essential criteria for the roles (please see below). You will be expected to meet all of the essential criteria in order to move to the shortlisting stage of the recruitment process.

We are looking for applicants who meet the following criteria:

For a Junior post

We expect you to have at least three years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to experience in an Emergency Department (ED).
At least 1 years experience in ED in the NHS at CT1/2 level

To be considered for Tier 3 (CT3) level role, you will need MRCEM exam plus minimum of 2 years in pure ED setting in the NHS at CT1/2 level

Advanced Life Support (ALS) qualification

For a Senior post

At least six years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to experience in an ED

ALS and ATLS qualifications

MRCEM exam (full)

You will have worked in an NHS medical role, with at least two years experience in the ED in an NHS acute Trust at CT3 or higher level

IAC sign off

These are service posts so do not have educational approval, but you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet your individual needs.

We expect that you will keep yourself up to date with current knowledge and practice, attend clinical meetings within the department and to participate in audit and in service training of other professionals.

Clinical Fellows in the Emergency Department can expect to:
Build on previous experience and develop increased expertise in the identification, assessment and management of sick patients

Gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, with appropriated decision making around need for admission and discharge +/- primary care/specialty follow up

Gain experience and familiarity in managing poly-trauma patients and the concept of ‘silver trauma’

Have opportunities to acquire additional skills such as fascia iliaca block, chest drain etc

To enhance your communication skills with patients relatives and colleagues

To keep up to date with mandatory training required for your role

To participate in the annual appraisal process

We have successfully supported many doctors who have come to work with us to gain places on training programmes, just let us know if this is your aim and we’ll do everything we can to help you get there. Alternatively if you would like a longer term trust post or to take the CESR training pathway with NUH, we are really happy to have these discussions with you too.
