We are seeking an experienced, motivated and compassionate Band 7 Neonatal Ward Manager to provide effective clinical leadership, operational management, and professional nursing oversight within the neonatal unit at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.We are seeking an experienced, motivated and compassionate Band 7 Neonatal Ward Manager to provide effective clinical leadership, operational management, and professional nursing oversight within the neonatal unit at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.

This is a key leadership role for a nurse with neonatal experience who is passionate about patient safety, staff wellbeing and service improvement. You will play a vital role in delivering safe, effective and highquality care for the neonatal babies whilst supporting compliance with national standards, local policies, and NHS objectives, ensuring excellent clinical outcomes and patient experience alongside the multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

Promote a positive working environment which allows staff to show initiative. To co-ordinate the staffing of the Neonatal Unit ensuring appropriate skill-mix throughout the 24 hours and the most efficient use of all resources. To participate in the recruitment and selection of staff and co-ordinate the annual leave of all staff.

To be responsible for the updating and development of clinical practises utilising evidence based practice in conjunction with the medical teams and the Neonatal Practice Development Nurse.

To be responsible for the promotion of the role of the neonatal nurse, developing a neonatal nursing service which is in the best interests of infants and families.

To be responsible for the effective management of change in response to clinical or organisational demands. Establish working groups to develop specific project work. Develop an effective learning culture suited to the needs of pre and post registered students. Identify the training requirements necessary to support and develop neonatal nursing/midwifery staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To actively manage the delivery of care on a day to day level. To ensure effective monitoring of manpower requirements and to implement measures to insure an appropriate skill-mix. To facilitate and maintain effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team. Work in partnership with other service providers leading to efficient care pathways for the infant.

To develop and evaluate clinical policies and procedures for neonates, monitoring and reviewing clinical standards initiating and facilitating research and audit programmes and using risk assessment and the implementation of evidence based practise in line with the principles of Clinical Governance.

To initiate and lead regular staff meetings ensuring that the Neonatal Team/Neonatal Community team are kept informed and involved in unit developments, Health Group or Trust decisions.

To maintain statistical information relating to Neonatal Unit activity.

To ensure the implementation of the Trust’s attendance management policy and the provision of support to staff returning from sick leave.

To ensure that all staff have an annual performance appraisal interview and personal development plan.

To be responsible for the management of the Neonatal Unit staff and supplies budget. Monitor and control the expenditure and use of resources.

To be responsible for the management of the Neonatal Community Services staff and supplies budget. Monitor and control the expenditure and use of resources.

To promote neonatal initiatives within the Children’s Service Plan and the Trust Implementation Plan.

To be a visible point of contact for infants’ families and carers, and all staff within the unit.

Act as a role model to ensure that dignity, rights and confidentiality of the babies and team members are protected.
