Full job description

Job Overview

The Catering Manager is responsible for the school catering service including the kitchen, catering staff, budgets, Health & Safety, compliance, and customer satisfaction. As Catering Manager, you will have operational responsibility for the day-to-day running of the catering department. Working closely with the Head Chef, you will lead and support the Catering team, to deliver the highest quality of food and service for students, staff and special events, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and school policies.

Service Delivery

Oversee the provision of high-quality school meals in line with government guidelines and legislation on school nutrition standards
To support the Head Chef in menu planning to ensure a varied and nutritious food offer is provided.
Deliver best value through authorised suppliers to ensure the cost effectiveness of the catering service
Stock ordering and management to prevent shortages or excess supply and adhering to the catering budget
Identify and recommend efficiency improvements and cost savings to deliver benefits to the school and customers
Liaise with the Head Chef regarding the planning and organisation of formal functions and events.
Ensure that all events and extra-curricular catering requirements are met, ensuring that hospitality areas are clean and well presented at all times
Reconcile the tills and provide accurate sales records including monitoring free school meal balances, hospitality and costing of events and functions.

Health & Safety and Compliance

Ensure compliance with all aspects of health and safety legislation, school catering standards and COSHH regulations
Cater to special dietary requirements and ensure that allergy information is effectively communicated and labelled
Ensure that the kitchen and dining area are kept clean and hygienic in line with the cleaning schedule
Ensure that kitchen equipment is used safely and according to operating manuals
Ensure that kitchen and catering equipment is maintained according to the maintenance schedule
Ensure that catering staff are adhering to proper hygiene procedures, including handwashing and wearing the correct uniform
Record all accidents and incidents following school processes and policies.

Staff Management

Supervise and deploy catering staff to ensure efficiency and high-quality food provision
Prepare and manage the duty rota, delegate tasks appropriately to staff, and ensure the smooth running of the team
Responsible for ensuring any staff absences are covered and there is no detrimental impact on service delivery
Carry out performance management duties and make sure all staff in the team have relevant, required training
Promote morale and wellbeing among the catering staff
Assist in the recruitment and selection of catering staff
Carry out induction and training for new staff members

Communication

To Act as an initial point of contact for all customer groups using the catering facilities including parents and staff.
To actively monitor satisfaction with food provided
To undertake the appropriate promotion and marketing of the catering service

Other

Be available to work out of core hours and term time for occasional formal functions and events.
To maintain confidentiality at all times.
Adhere to safeguarding policies and promote the welfare of children at all times.
Undertake training as required.
