Full job description

HYPE is a growing youth and community social enterprise creating opportunities for children, young people and communities across the Liverpool City Region. Our work spans youth and community programmes, cycling and social enterprise, volunteering, international opportunities, sport, community hubs and place-based projects.

As HYPE continues to grow, we are strengthening our senior management team to ensure our projects, people and systems develop alongside the organisation.

Role Purpose

The Operations Manager will take responsibility for the effective day-to-day operation of HYPE, ensuring our projects, sites and teams are well managed, safe, financially responsible and delivering high-quality outcomes.

Working closely with the CEO, the Operations Manager will provide leadership across HYPE’s operational activity, allowing the CEO to focus more time on strategy, partnerships, investment and the organisation’s longer-term growth.

The role will connect HYPE’s different projects and teams, creating greater consistency, accountability and communication across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

Oversee the day-to-day delivery of HYPE’s projects, services and community operations.
Support Project Managers and operational leads to deliver against agreed plans, targets and budgets.
Ensure projects are appropriately staffed, resourced and organised.
Develop clear operational systems and processes across the organisation.
Identify operational issues early and ensure appropriate action is taken.
Provide regular operational updates to the CEO and Directors.

People & Performance

Line manage and support designated Project Managers and operational staff.
Establish clear expectations, responsibilities and performance targets.
Hold regular supervision and operational review meetings.
Support recruitment, induction and development of staff.
Promote a positive, accountable and supportive working culture.
Work with managers to address performance, attendance and staffing issues.

Quality & Impact

Ensure HYPE programmes maintain consistently high standards of delivery.
Support teams to collect accurate attendance, outcomes and impact information.
Ensure monitoring requirements for funders and partners are embedded within project delivery.
Work with teams to capture case studies, participant feedback and evidence of impact.
Use operational data to identify improvements and inform future planning.

Finance & Resources

Work with the CEO, finance team and Project Managers to monitor project budgets and expenditure.
Ensure managers understand and remain accountable for their budgets.
Support effective purchasing, resource allocation and value for money.
Monitor project performance against agreed financial and operational targets.
Contribute to annual budgeting and operational planning.

Compliance & Risk

Ensure HYPE’s operational activities comply with relevant policies, procedures and legal requirements.
Maintain high standards of safeguarding, health and safety and risk management.
Ensure appropriate risk assessments and operational procedures are in place across HYPE sites and activities.
Support the organisation to maintain appropriate records, insurance requirements and compliance documentation.
Escalate significant operational or safeguarding concerns appropriately.

Organisational Development

Work closely with the CEO and Business Development Manager to ensure organisational growth can be delivered effectively.
Help translate new funding, contracts and opportunities into realistic operational delivery plans.
Support the mobilisation and launch of new projects and locations.
Improve communication and coordination between HYPE’s different teams and projects.
Contribute to HYPE’s annual operational and strategic planning.

The Operations Manager will have oversight across a diverse portfolio which currently includes:

Youth and community programmes
Central Park Community Hub
HYPE Urban Bikes and community cycling programmes
Holiday activity programmes
Vibrant Parks and place-based community projects
New Brighton FootGolf
Youth volunteering and social action
International youth and volunteering opportunities
Funded programmes and partnership projects across the Liverpool City Region

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Significant experience managing operations, projects or services.
Experience managing and developing staff and teams.
Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Experience working with budgets, targets and performance information.
Strong understanding of safeguarding, health and safety and operational risk.
Ability to develop practical systems and improve organisational processes.
Strong communication and relationship-management skills.
Confidence working independently and making operational decisions.
Ability to work effectively with senior leadership, staff, partners and external organisations.
Commitment to improving opportunities for children, young people and communities.

Desirable

Experience within a charity, CIC, social enterprise, youth, sport or community organisation.
Experience managing multiple sites or geographically dispersed projects.
Experience delivering publicly or grant-funded programmes.
Knowledge of monitoring, evaluation and social impact.
Experience supporting organisational growth or change.
Knowledge of the Liverpool City Region and its communities.

The Person We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong management skills with a practical approach. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between strategic planning and day-to-day problem solving. They will be visible across our projects, build strong relationships with staff and managers, and create the structures and accountability required for a growing organisation.

This is an important leadership appointment for HYPE. The Operations Manager will help ensure that as the organisation grows, the quality of our work, culture and impact grows with it.

Pay: £42,500.00 per year
