An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Information Governance and Data Protection Officer to join our Governance and Support Directorate as part of the Legal Services team.

The role
We are looking to recruit a Senior Information Governance and Data Protection Officer to join our supportive and professional Legal Services team. This post will focus on supporting all areas of the organisation with information and records management and support and guidance regarding data protection. The successful candidate will be designated as the Council’s Data Protection Officer, a statutory requirement.
The emphasis of the role will be on:

Leading a programme of improvement for information governance and records management across the organisation

Giving professional advice and guidance to the organisation in relation to compliance with regulations and legislation including, the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI), the Computer Misuse Act 1990, Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR), the Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005, UK General Data Protection Regulation 2016 (UK GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA), the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, and more.

Investigating and advising on data breaches, data sharing agreements and privacy notices

Overseeing compliance with transparency legislation and information governance best practice

Providing updates and reports to the Data Security Board and Corporate Leadership Board

Ensuring that the Council has robust data retention and cleansing arrangements in place

Providing advice and support on information governance and data sharing arrangements and compliance, particularly as the Council progresses through local government reorganisation

Providing appropriate induction and refresher training for staff in relation to information governance and data protection

Co-ordinating the production of the Annual Governance Statement, Code of Corporate Governance and providing support to the Service Director for Governance and Support

About You
The successful candidate would be expected to meet the criteria set out in the job description, in particular:

Substantial experience of information governance and records management

Demonstrable working knowledge of the Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR 2021 and Freedom of Information Act 2000 and experience of handling data breaches and advising on DPIAs, data sharing agreements and privacy notices.

Ability to develop and promote good practice and provide training and guidance across the organisation

A skilled communicator, able to work independently but also build relationships across the council.

Experience of co-ordinating the production of the Annual Governance Statement and Code of Corporate governance or relevant similar experience.
