We’re looking for an qualified, experienced Waste Manager to take ownership of waste management services across Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites.

This is an opportunity to lead a specialist service that sits at the intersection of environmental sustainability, regulatory compliance and operational excellence. You’ll play a key role in shaping how waste is managed across the organisation, ensuring compliance, driving improvements in recycling and waste reduction, and supporting wider environmental objectives.

As Waste Manager, you’ll provide strategic and operational leadership for waste management services across multiple sites, ensuring waste disposal, segregation and recycling arrangements are safe, compliant and effective.

You’ll act as the organisation’s specialist advisor on waste management and environmental compliance, working closely with operational teams, clinical services, contractors and regulators to maintain high standards and drive continuous improvement.

This role combines compliance, performance management, sustainability and stakeholder engagement. You’ll lead audits and assurance activities, monitor service performance, oversee contractor delivery and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste and support environmental objectives.

We’re seeking a proactive and influential manager with experience in waste management, environmental compliance or a related discipline, who can translate legislation and policy into practical, effective service delivery.

Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS) delivers Estates, Facilities and Support Services to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the wider healthcare community.

Our teams play a vital role in supporting patient care by ensuring the environments in which services are delivered remain safe, efficient and sustainable.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping waste and environmental services across Gloucestershire’s hospital sites. Working closely with operational and clinical teams, you’ll contribute to sustainability goals, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement, while collaborating with colleagues from a wide range of professional backgrounds.

The Waste Manager is responsible for the strategic and operational management of waste services delivered by Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS) across Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation trust (GHNHSFT) sites.

Key responsibilities include:

Leading the management and continuous improvement of waste services across supported healthcare sites
Acting as the organisation’s subject matter expert for waste management and environmental compliance
Ensuring compliance with healthcare waste legislation, environmental regulations, health and safety requirements and organisational governance frameworks
Developing and maintaining waste management policies, procedures, Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Systems of Work
Leading waste audits, inspections and compliance assurance activities
Monitoring waste performance, contractor delivery, recycling rates and service costs through KPI reporting and analysis
Managing waste-related incidents, investigations and corrective actions
Driving waste reduction, recycling, reuse and sustainability initiatives that support environmental objectives and waste hierarchy
Supporting contract management, procurement activities and service development projects
Developing and delivering waste management and compliance training programmes
Contributing to governance reporting assurance processes and continuous improvement activities

The postholder will work closely with operational, clinical and corporate stakeholders, contractors, regulators and partner organisations to ensure waste services are delivered safely, effectively and in accordance with statutory requirements.
