BMS & Operational Technology Systems Engineer - London Based
JLL is seeking an experienced BMS & Operational Technology (OT) Systems Engineer to support the reliability, performance, resilience and secure operation of building management and control systems across a critical London portfolio.65
The role is principally focused on BMS / industrial controls engineering delivery—including BMS servers, supervisory software, integration gateways, controllers, field networks and OT connectivity. In addition, the role will provide resilience and security assurance, ensuring OT/BMS systems are managed in a controlled, standardised and risk-aware manner in line with client operational resilience expectations.
This position works closely with operational engineering teams, IT/network teams, BMS service providers and client stakeholders to deliver stable, secure and auditable building controls operations.
What this job involves:
As a BMS & OT Systems Engineer (Resilience & Security) you will take technical ownership of the OT/BMS estate within a multi-site critical portfolio. You will provide hands-on engineering support, manage specialist vendor delivery, and embed structured controls for secure access, patch governance and recoverability while maintaining operational uptime.
This is not a pure cyber role. It is a controls engineering role with embedded resilience and cyber-awareness responsibilities.
Key Accountabilities
Operational Technology Operations & Engineering
Act as engineering lead for the day-to-day health and integrity of BMS/OT platforms across the portfolio.
Support BMS fault diagnosis, performance optimisation and strategy improvements across plant and systems.
Lead lifecycle engineering activities including software upgrades, controller refresh, server/workstation replacement and platform migrations.
Support commissioning, testing, tuning and validation of control strategies, alarms, trends and system performance.
Own engineering standards and technical quality for BMS works delivered by vendors/subcontractors.
Ensure systems remain safe, reliable and performant in a live operational environment.
OT/BMS Network & Integration
Support and maintain OT/BMS connectivity including switches, segmentation, topology and OT integration pathways.
Work with IT and network teams to ensure OT/BMS systems are integrated using approved patterns (segmentation, boundary control, remote connectivity).
Maintain accurate OT documentation including:
Network diagrams/topology
Panel/controller drawings and schematics
OT asset registers and configuration records
Support integration of OT-connected assets (e.g., meters, UPS/generators, chillers, lighting controls and specialist systems).
Resilience, cyber & security
Embed practical and maintainable security controls into OT engineering practice, including:
patch/update coordination for BMS servers, gateways and OT workstations
hardening / secure configuration of OT assets (where supported)
account and access management for BMS platforms and engineering tools
backup, restore and recovery assurance for supervisory systems
Ensure remote vendor access follows agreed approval processes and technical safeguards (secure pathways, traceability, timed access where possible).
Support vulnerability management activities by assessing findings, advising practical remediation and coordinating execution during maintenance windows.
Participate in resilience testing and assurance activities relating to the OT/BMS estate (e.g., recovery testing, operational risk reviews and audit readiness checks).
Provide practical guidance to site teams and vendors to reduce operational risk while sustaining uptime.
Governance, Change Control & Standards
Enforce structured OT change control including technical review, testing approach, rollback planning and evidence capture.
Ensure vendor works comply with required technical governance including method statements, access approvals, commissioning records and as-built documentation.
Maintain configuration control and system baselines (versions, controller backups, databases, golden builds).
Provide reporting inputs to client stakeholders relating to OT system performance, risk issues and improvement delivery.
Stakeholder & Vendor Management
Act as technical interface between:
site operations teams and apply hands on support
BMS vendors / specialist service providers
IT/network/security stakeholders
client operational resilience representatives
Review and approve BMS vendor technical proposals, designs and implementation plans.
Drive consistent engineering OT practices and handover standards across sites.
Required Qualifications
Education
Apprenticeship, HNC/HND, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in:
Building Services Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Automation or similar.
Essentials Skills & Experience
Strong hands-on background in BMS / industrial controls engineering (multi-site operational estate preferred).
Proven ability to diagnose, commission and optimise BMS systems in live operational environments.
Working knowledge of OT communications and integration protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, OPC, LonWorks or equivalents).
Experience managing BMS/OT servers, databases, backups and platform lifecycle.
Strong understanding of OT engineering governance: documentation, change control, evidence-based commissioning.
Comfortable working in critical environments where uptime, safety and service continuity are key priorities.
Desirable Skills & Certifications
Vendor platform training/certifications desirable (Trend / Siemens / Schneider / Honeywell / Tridium Niagara).
Awareness of OT security principles such as segmentation, access control, remote connectivity controls, patch governance and recoverability.
Familiarity with relevant guidance/frameworks (IEC 62443, NIST, CIS) is advantageous but not essential.
OT/cyber awareness certification (e.g., IEC 62443 fundamentals, GIAC GICSP) desirable but not required.
Core Competencies
Strong troubleshooting discipline and engineering judgement.
Methodical documentation and configuration management mindset.
Effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Vendor management and delivery leadership.
Able to balance operational continuity with improvement delivery (risk-aware, structured approach).
