Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Software Engineer with strong mobile application, BLE and connected-device experience to join our growing technology team.
This role will have particular responsibility for the ongoing development and maintenance of our clients' iOS and Android mobile applications, ensuring reliable connectivity between applications, BLE-enabled products, cloud services and our wider IoT ecosystem.
You will also help develop and expand our connected vehicle experiences, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while helping us deliver similar functionality for the Chinese automotive market through platforms such as HiCar and CarLife.
Beyond consumer-facing applications, you will work across our IoT companion and intelligence platform, transforming connected-product data into meaningful dashboards, alerts and actionable insights that help our brand partners understand product usage, performance and customer behaviour.
This is a hands-on development role requiring someone comfortable working across mobile apps, BLE-connected hardware, cloud infrastructure, APIs, automotive integrations and IoT data platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, test and continuously improve client-branded mobile applications across iOS and Android.
- Maintain applications already deployed to the Apple App Store and Google Play, including OS compatibility updates, bug fixes, security updates, performance improvements and new feature releases.
- Develop and maintain reliable communication between mobile applications and BLE-connected IoT devices, including device discovery, pairing, authentication, connection management, data transfer, reconnection and firmware/device status handling.
- Work closely with embedded hardware and firmware engineers to ensure reliable communication between physical products, mobile applications and cloud services.
- Develop and improve Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, allowing users to interact safely with compatible SMART products through their vehicle's infotainment system.
- Develop comparable connected-vehicle experiences for the Chinese automotive ecosystem, including integrations with platforms such as HiCar and CarLife.
- Help create a consistent global connected-vehicle architecture capable of supporting different automotive ecosystems and regional requirements.
- Develop vehicle-facing functionality including product status, alerts, controls and connected features such as heating, cooling, seat positioning/recline, installation monitoring, occupancy and other SMART product functions.
- Work across our IoT companion platform, ensuring data generated by connected products is securely captured, processed and presented to our clients.
- Develop dashboards, reporting tools and platform functionality that convert IoT data into actionable insights for brand partners, helping them understand product usage, engagement, performance, trends and customer behaviour.
- Design and implement RESTful APIs and web services to enable seamless communication between devices, applications, automotive platforms and cloud infrastructure.
- Develop, test and deploy software components for cloud-based and connected systems using appropriate technologies including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Java and other relevant languages.
- Utilize front-end technologies including React, Angular, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, AJAX and modern UI frameworks to create intuitive interfaces and dashboards.
- Manage relational and NoSQL databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server and MongoDB, applying appropriate database design principles for efficient and scalable data storage.
- Integrate and maintain cloud services using platforms such as AWS and Azure, including microservices and serverless architectures.
- Diagnose and resolve issues across the complete connected-product stack, including mobile application → BLE device → firmware → cloud → database → client platform.
- Conduct debugging, unit testing, integration testing and code reviews while ensuring adherence to Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) best practices.
- Work with Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines and release-management processes.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation covering APIs, system architecture, BLE protocols, mobile applications, cloud infrastructure and automotive integrations.
- Participate in Agile development processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Proven commercial experience developing and maintaining iOS and Android mobile applications.
- Strong hands-on experience developing mobile applications that communicate with physical devices using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This is an essential requirement for the role.
- Demonstrable understanding of BLE concepts including GATT services and characteristics, pairing, bonding, device discovery, connection management, notifications, data transfer and reconnection strategies.
- Experience supporting and maintaining production mobile applications throughout their lifecycle, including App Store and Google Play releases.
- Strong understanding of mobile application architecture, performance, security, debugging and testing.
- Experience integrating mobile applications with RESTful APIs, cloud platforms and connected IoT products.
- Experience with native mobile technologies such as Swift/SwiftUI for iOS and Kotlin/Java for Android, and/or relevant cross-platform frameworks such as React Native or Flutter.
- Strong software development experience using languages such as Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Java, PHP or Ruby.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and/or Azure.
- Strong understanding of API architecture, web services, authentication and secure communication between devices, applications and cloud platforms.
- Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server and/or NoSQL databases such as MongoDB.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, debugging, unit testing, integration testing and software development best practices.
- Experience using Git/GitHub and modern version-control and development workflows.
- Ability to work effectively across software, firmware, hardware, product and commercial teams.
- Ability to manage multiple client applications and product programmes simultaneously within a fast-moving development environment.
