Role Overview
Nurture the Children International , as UK registered charity (1173351) are seeking an experienced Technical Team Lead to own the end-to-end delivery of a new mobile application for both Android and iOS that advances our charitable mission. You will guide the product from initial concept and technical discovery through design, development, testing, launch, and ongoing iteration. This is a hands-on leadership role combining technical direction, team management, and close collaboration with non-technical stakeholders to ensure the app delivers real-world impact for the communities we serve. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the full project lifecycle: discovery, requirements gathering, architecture, development, testing, deployment, and post-launch support.
- Define and own the technical strategy and architecture for a cross-platform mobile app (native or cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter/React Native, or separate native codebases).
- Build, mentor, and manage a small technical team (developers, QA, possibly designers or DevOps).
- Translate charitable goals and user needs into clear technical requirements and prioritised backlogs.
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices: code quality, CI/CD, security, accessibility, performance, and data privacy (especially important when handling sensitive user or beneficiary data).
- Collaborate closely with product, programme, fundraising, and communications teams to ensure the app aligns with organisational strategy and user impact goals.
- Manage third-party integrations (payment gateways, CRM systems, analytics, content management, notification services, etc.).
- Oversee app store submissions, compliance with Apple and Google policies, and ongoing release management.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks; manage timelines, budgets, and vendor relationships where required.
- Champion inclusive design and accessibility so the app is usable by diverse audiences, including those with limited digital literacy or accessibility needs.
- Report progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership in clear, non-technical language.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience leading the delivery of mobile applications for both Android and iOS from concept to launch (minimum 4–6 years in mobile development, with at least 2 years in a technical lead or team lead capacity).
- Strong hands-on technical background in one or more of: Kotlin/Java (Android), Swift/SwiftUI (iOS), or modern cross-platform frameworks (Flutter, React Native).
- Solid understanding of mobile architecture patterns, API design, offline-first capabilities, push notifications, authentication, and secure data handling.
- Experience managing small technical teams and working in agile or hybrid delivery environments.
- Demonstrable ability to work effectively with non-technical stakeholders and translate between technical and organisational priorities.
- Familiarity with app store processes, release management, analytics, and crash reporting tools.
- Strong communication, prioritisation, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to the values and mission of the charity sector.
Desirable
- Previous experience in the non-profit, charity, or social-impact sector.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG, platform-specific guidelines) and inclusive design.
- Experience with backend systems, cloud infrastructure (AWS, Firebase, Azure), or headless CMS platforms.
- Familiarity with data protection regulations (UK GDPR / equivalent) and ethical data practices.
- Experience launching apps in multiple languages or for international audiences.
