Trainee Field Engineer
Weltech International Ltd – St Ives, Cambridgeshire
About the role
Are you someone who enjoys figuring out how things work, fixing things, using computers, or getting stuck into practical projects?
Weltech is looking for a Trainee Field Engineer to join our growing engineering team.
You don't need previous experience in alarms, CCTV or networking. We'll teach you the technical side of the job. What we're really looking for is someone who is practical, curious, reliable and keen to learn.
You'll work alongside our experienced engineers, gradually developing the skills needed to install, configure, maintain and fault-find a wide range of technology used on farms and agricultural sites throughout the UK.
What you'll be working with
Your training will cover a wide range of technologies, including:
- Electronic alarm systems and control panels
- CCTV and camera systems
- Computer networking and Wi-Fi
- Routers, switches and wireless links
- Sensors and monitoring equipment
- Cabling and electrical connections
- IoT and remote monitoring equipment
- Our own electronic products and equipment
- Fault finding and diagnosing technical problems
- Commissioning and testing equipment
No two days are necessarily the same. One day you could be installing a CCTV system, another could involve setting up a farm-wide Wi-Fi network or diagnosing a fault on an alarm system.
Your training
You'll initially work alongside experienced engineers and learn through a combination of:
- Practical, hands-on training
- Working alongside experienced engineers
- Manufacturer training
- Internal product training
- Electrical and electronic fundamentals
- Networking and IT training
- On-the-job fault finding
- Gradually taking responsibility for your own installations
As your skills and confidence develop, you'll take on increasingly complex work and eventually progress towards working independently.
What we're looking for
You don't need previous engineering experience.
We're more interested in your attitude and aptitude.
You could be a good fit if you:
- Enjoy practical, hands-on work
- Are naturally curious about how things work
- Enjoy fixing or building things
- Have an interest in electronics, computers, IT, vehicles, machinery or technology
- Are comfortable learning new things
- Can approach problems logically
- Take pride in doing a job properly
- Are reliable and willing to work hard
- Are comfortable meeting and speaking with customers
- Don't mind working outdoors and travelling to different sites
Previous experience with electronics, computers, networking, electrical work, mechanics, DIY, coding or similar is useful but not essential.
We're happy to consider school and college leavers who can demonstrate the right attitude and enthusiasm.
The job
The role is based from our St Ives, Cambridgeshire office, with regular travel to customer sites throughout the UK.
You will need to be comfortable spending time travelling and working on agricultural sites. The work can be physical at times and may involve working outdoors and in agricultural buildings.
A full UK driving licence will eventually be required, although we can discuss the requirements for applicants who are currently learning to drive.
Career progression
This isn't intended to be a job where you're doing the same basic tasks year after year.
As your skills develop, there are opportunities to progress into areas such as:
Trainee Engineer → Field Engineer → Senior Engineer
Weltech develops its own products as well as installing and supporting them, so there are opportunities to become involved in electronics, firmware, networking, software and new product development as your experience grows.

The person we're looking for
Qualifications are less important to us than potential.
If you're the sort of person who sees something that's broken and immediately wants to know why, enjoys learning how things work and would rather be doing something practical than sitting behind a desk all day, we'd like to hear from you.
No previous alarm or CCTV experience required.
Full training provided.
Pay: £26,000.00-£28,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
