Job Purpose
The Hospitality Tutor/Assessor is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across hospitality apprenticeship standards. The postholder will initially deliver the Level 2 Food and Beverage Team Member apprenticeship standard (ST1488), with scope to support wider hospitality, supervisory and management provision as the curriculum develops.
Working closely with apprentices, employers and colleagues, the postholder will support learners in developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become confident, commercially aware and customer-focused hospitality professionals. The successful candidate will combine recent hospitality industry experience with outstanding coaching and teaching practice to prepare apprentices for successful End Point Assessment (EPA) and sustained career progression, including progression into hospitality supervision and management. Regular travel to employer and learner sites is compulsory and forms an essential part of the role.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching, Learning & Assessment
The postholder will deliver engaging, high-quality learning experiences that develop apprentices' occupational competence and support achievement across hospitality apprenticeship standards, initially focusing on Level 2 Food and Beverage Team Member (ST1488).
Responsibilities include:
- Planning, delivering and reviewing teaching, learning and assessment that meets the requirements of apprenticeship standards and awarding organisations.
- Supporting apprentices to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required within their occupational role.
- Delivering engaging learning using current hospitality practice, real workplace scenarios and a range of teaching methodologies.
- Assessing learner progress through a variety of assessment methods and providing timely, developmental feedback.
- Preparing apprentices for successful End Point Assessment through effective coaching, observation preparation, professional discussion/interview practice and portfolio support.
- Embedding digital skills, professional behaviours, safeguarding, food safety, health and safety, British Values, equality and excellent customer service throughout the learner journey.
Curriculum Delivery
Deliver curriculum that reflects current hospitality and food and beverage practice and enables apprentices to apply learning confidently, safely and commercially within the workplace.
This includes developing learners' understanding and application of:
- Food and beverage service standards, product knowledge, preparation, presentation and safe service.
- Customer service and the guest experience, including adapting service to individual needs, handling complaints and creating positive customer interactions.
- Effective communication, teamwork and collaboration across front-of-house, back-of-house and wider hospitality operations.
- Food safety, allergen awareness, health and safety, hygiene, cleaning, risk management and responsible working practices.
- Sales and commercial awareness, including promotions, upselling, taking payments, stock control, waste reduction, sustainability and the foundations of hospitality supervision and management.
The postholder will continually review and update curriculum content to reflect changes in legislation, food safety and licensing requirements, employer needs, sector practice, customer expectations and apprenticeship standards.
Learner Progress & Support
The Tutor/Assessor will manage an agreed caseload of hospitality apprentices, initially delivering Level 2 Food and Beverage Team Member (ST1488), and providing high-quality support throughout the apprenticeship journey.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring learner progress and maintaining high levels of engagement.
- Conducting regular progress reviews with apprentices and employers, including face-to-face visits where required.
- Setting meaningful SMART targets that support timely achievement.
- Identifying barriers to learning and implementing appropriate support strategies.
- Promoting independent learning, resilience, professional confidence and progression within the hospitality sector, including progression into supervisory and management roles.
Employer Engagement
Develop positive partnerships with employers to ensure apprenticeship delivery reflects current hospitality practice, operational requirements, customer service standards and organisational needs.
Responsibilities include:
- Building effective relationships with employers, workplace mentors, supervisors, managers and hospitality professionals.
- Supporting employers to identify suitable workplace activities, observations, projects and learning opportunities.
- Providing advice on apprenticeship requirements, workplace evidence, off-the-job training and learner development.
- Working collaboratively to ensure apprentices develop occupational competence, professional behaviours, customer service excellence and safe working practice within their role.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
Support OTM Apprenticeships Limited's commitment to outstanding quality and continuous improvement by:
- Maintaining accurate learner records and documentation.
- Ensuring delivery complies with ESFA funding rules and apprenticeship requirements.
- Participating in internal quality assurance, standardisation and curriculum development activities.
- Supporting audit readiness and contributing to continuous quality improvement.
- Maintaining awareness of Ofsted expectations, hospitality sector requirements, food safety and health and safety expectations, and best practice in apprenticeship delivery.
Safeguarding, Prevent & Equality
The postholder will:
- Promote safeguarding, learner welfare and the welfare of children and vulnerable adults at all times.

Essential Qualifications
Applicants will possess:
- A recognised teaching qualification (Level 3 Award in Education and Training or above), or a willingness to achieve.
- A recognised assessor qualification (CAVA, A1 or equivalent), or a willingness to achieve.
- A relevant hospitality, catering, food and beverage or hospitality management qualification at Level 3 or above, or demonstrable equivalent occupational competence. A higher-level hospitality/management qualification or substantial leadership and management experience is desirable for future supervisory and management delivery.
Essential Occupational Experience
Applicants must demonstrate substantial, recent occupational experience within hospitality, with strong competence in food and beverage operations and experience relevant to the standards delivered. Experience of hospitality supervision or management is highly desirable.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate practical experience of food and beverage service, customer service, food safety and hygiene, health and safety, communication, teamwork, stock and waste control, sales/upselling and resolving customer issues. Experience of supervising teams, managing service standards, operational planning, performance or commercial targets is advantageous.
Recent occupational competence within hospitality is considered essential. The postholder must also be willing and able to travel regularly to employer and learner sites; travel is compulsory.

- The ability to interpret apprenticeship KSBs and translate hospitality and management concepts into engaging learning experiences, initially for Level 2 Food and Beverage Team Member (ST1488) and, where appropriate, future supervisory and management provision.

The following would be advantageous:
- Experience delivering apprenticeship standards.
- Knowledge of End Point Assessment requirements.
- Experience delivering hospitality, catering, food and beverage or hospitality management qualifications or apprenticeship standards.
- Experience of leadership, management, staff development, quality assurance, service improvement or commercial responsibility within a hospitality setting.
- Membership of a relevant hospitality professional body, where applicable.
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for compulsory travel to employer and learner sites.
