Warner Hotels is rebuilding its guest-facing digital estate on a modern, microservices architecture — moving away from a fragmented collection of out-of-the-box portals toward a purpose-built digital platform that delivers personalised, seamless guest experiences across discovery, booking, pre-stay, and in-stay touchpoints.
The Software Engineer (Digital) is a hands-on software engineer who builds the digital products that guests and staff experience every day — including WarnerHotels.co.uk, the MyWarner guest portal, the Club Warner loyalty platform, and the AI concierge booking assistant. The architecture is built on a React/Next.js front-end, with a back-end of independently deployable .NET 8 / ASP.NET Core microservices hosted on AWS — a mix of serverless (Lambda) and containerised (ECS/Fargate) deployments depending on service characteristics.
You will be embedded in sprint teams alongside the Digital Tech Lead, internal colleagues, and the nearshore engineering partner (Frontline) — writing production-quality code, participating in architecture discussions, and taking genuine engineering ownership of the features and services you deliver. This is a role for an engineer who cares about the craft: clean code, well-designed APIs, comprehensive tests, and digital experiences that actually work beautifully for guests
Key Responsibilities include:
Front-End Feature Development
- Build and maintain features across Warner's guest-facing digital products using React and Next.js — implementing server-side rendering, static generation, and client-side interactions to the agreed architecture patterns.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of WarnerHotels.co.uk — search experience, IBE booking funnel, conversion optimisation, and promotional campaign delivery — in partnership with the commercial and marketing teams.
- Build and maintain the MyWarner guest portal — delivering logged-in guest journeys including pre-stay upsell, activity booking, and in-stay engagement features.
- Contribute to Club Warner loyalty platform features — enrolment flows, member personalisation, and loyalty mechanics — consuming APIs from back-end services.
Back-End Microservice Development
- Design and build .NET 8 / ASP.NET Core microservices that form the back-end of Warner's digital platform — implementing REST APIs, domain logic, and integration with Warner's core systems (iStay, Maestro, Bloomreach, Optimizely, Amazon Connect).
- Deploy and operate microservices on AWS using a mix of Lambda (for event-driven and short-lived compute) and ECS/Fargate (for longer-running, containerised services) — selecting the appropriate hosting model for each service's requirements.
- Implement event-driven communication between services using AWS SQS, SNS, and EventBridge — ensuring loose coupling and resilience across the microservices estate.
- Contribute to integrations with the WhatsApp Business API via Amazon Connect for inbound customer engagement.
API Design & Integration
- Design RESTful APIs to agreed standards — implementing OpenAPI specifications, versioning, and API documentation for all services you build.
- Work with the Integration Architect to ensure services are built to Warner's API governance standards and registered in the API catalogue.
- Consume and integrate third-party APIs from Optimizely, Bloomreach, iStay, and Maestro — implementing appropriate error handling, retry logic, and circuit breakers.
Engineering Quality
- Write unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests for all features and services — maintaining test coverage to agreed standards
- Commit code through CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) — following branching strategy, automated build, test, lint, and deployment processes consistently.
- Participate in code reviews — providing constructive feedback to nearshore partners and internal colleagues, and actively responding to feedback on your own code.
- Monitor production services and respond to incidents within your service domain — investigating root cause and implementing permanent fixes.
Collaboration
- Participate fully in sprint ceremonies — sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Work collaboratively nearshore engineering partner — sharing architectural context, reviewing their pull requests, and contributing to a high-performing cross-geography engineering culture.
You'll need to have experience in:
Front-End
- React (required): component architecture, hooks, state management (Redux, Zustand, or Context API).
- Next.js (required): App Router, server components, server-side rendering, static generation, middleware, and API routes.
- TypeScript: required across both front-end and back-end.
- CSS: Tailwind CSS or CSS Modules; responsive and accessible design (WCAG 2.1 AA).
- Headless CMS integration: Optimizely and Bloomreach — experience with headless CMS patterns and personalisation APIs.
Back-End & Microservices
- .NET 8 / ASP.NET Core (required): REST API development with minimal APIs or controller-based approaches, middleware pipelines, dependency injection, and configuration management.
- C#: clean, idiomatic C# — LINQ, async/await, records, pattern matching.
- Microservices patterns: independently deployable services, API contracts, loose coupling, domain-driven service boundaries, circuit breakers (Polly or equivalent).
- Messaging: AWS SQS and SNS for asynchronous service communication; AWS EventBridge for event-driven patterns.
- API design: RESTful design principles, OpenAPI/Swagger specification, API versioning, and documentation.
- Authentication & security: OAuth 2.0, JWT, OWASP standards, PCI-DSS awareness for payment-adjacent services.
AWS Hosting
- AWS Lambda: serverless .NET 8 functions for event-driven compute, lightweight APIs, and scheduled tasks — using the AWS .NET Lambda runtime.
- AWS ECS/Fargate: containerised .NET microservice deployments for longer-running or higher-throughput services.
- Supporting AWS services: API Gateway, S3, CloudWatch, X-Ray, Parameter Store/Secrets Manager
- Docker: containerisation of .NET microservices for ECS/Fargate deployment.
DevOps & Engineering Practices
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions — automated build, test (xUnit, Jest), lint, Docker build, and deployment pipelines.
- Testing: xUnit and Moq for .NET unit and integration tests; Jest and React Testing Library for front-end; Playwright for end-to-end testing.
- Version control: Git — branching strategy, pull request workflow, semantic versioning.
- Observability: structured logging (Serilog or equivalent), AWS CloudWatch metrics and alarms, distributed tracing with AWS X-Ray.
Beneficial
- AI/conversational integration: OpenAI API or equivalent LLM integration for the AI concierge feature.
- WhatsApp Business API and Amazon Connect integration experience.
- Hospitality domain: iStay (CRS) and Maestro (PMS) API familiarity — useful but not required.
