Full job description

Job Title: Healthcare Assistant (HCA) – GP Practice

Job Summary:
The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) supports the clinical team in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within a GP practice. The role involves carrying out a range of clinical procedures and working closely with practice nurses and GPs to manage patients with long-term conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform clinical procedures including phlebotomy, 24-hour blood pressure (BP) monitoring, and electrocardiograms (ECGs)
Assist practice nurses with the management and review of long-term conditions (LTCs)
Support clinics for patients with severe mental illness (SMI) and hypertension
Prepare patients for examinations and treatments
Record accurate clinical observations and update patient records in line with practice protocols
Maintain and clean clinical equipment, ensuring it is safe and ready for use
Follow infection control, health and safety, and confidentiality guidelines at all times
Provide basic health promotion advice where appropriate

Person Specification:

Essential:

Experience in phlebotomy, ECG recording, and 24-hour BP monitoring
Experience working in a GP practice or primary care setting
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

Desirable:

Experience supporting LTC reviews, including SMI and hypertension
Knowledge of clinical systems ( SystmOne)
Relevant healthcare qualification

Working Relationships:

General Practitioners (GPs)
Practice Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
Administrative and reception staff
Patients and carers

Other Requirements:

Commitment to continuous professional development
Flexibility to meet the needs of the service
Understanding of safeguarding and patient confidentiality

This role is essential in ensuring efficient clinic flow and delivering safe, effective care to patients within the GP practice setting.
