Role Purpose
The Quality Control Technician is responsible for carrying out inspection activities across the full inspection lifecycle — from Goods In through to Final Inspection and dispatch. The role ensures that incoming materials, in-process work, and finished products consistently meet specification, drawing requirements, and applicable standards.
Working hands-on across production and the inspection area, the Quality Control Technician plays a key part in protecting product quality, supporting On-Time Delivery, and ensuring inspection records are accurate, traceable, and audit-ready.
Key Responsibilities
Goods In Inspection
- Inspect incoming materials, components, and bought-out items against purchase orders, drawings, and supplier documentation.
- Verify certification, traceability, and material conformity prior to release into stores or production.
- Raise non-conformance reports (NCRs) for items received outside specification and escalate to the QHSE & Facilities Manager.
- Ensure inspection records are completed accurately and goods are correctly identified, segregated, and stored.
In-Process Inspection
- Carry out in-process inspections at defined stages of manufacture, in line with inspection plans and routings.
- Verify dimensional, visual, and functional conformity against engineering drawings and specifications.
- Liaise with Production Team Leads and Operators to identify and contain quality issues as they arise.
- Support first-article inspections and verification of new or revised work instructions.
Final Inspection & Dispatch Release
- Conduct final inspection on completed products prior to release for packing and dispatch.
- Verify finished items against customer requirements, drawings, and applicable standards.
- Compile and check release documentation, including inspection records, certificates of conformity, and test reports as required.
- Approve product for dispatch or hold items pending resolution of identified issues.
Non-Conformance & Continuous Improvement
- Identify, document, and report non-conformances at any stage of the inspection lifecycle.
- Support root cause analysis and contribute to corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities.
- Highlight recurring quality issues and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work with Production, Engineering, and Purchasing to support resolution and prevention of defects.
Measuring Equipment & Calibration
- Use a range of measuring and inspection equipment, including verniers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, and other relevant tools.
- Ensure equipment is in calibration prior to use and report any defects or damage to the QHSE & Facilities Manager.
- Support the management of the calibration register for tools and equipment used in inspection.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely inspection records in line with company procedures and applicable standards.
- Ensure documentation is traceable, auditable, and available to support customer and third-party audits.
- Support the QHSE & Facilities Manager during internal and external audits.
- Carry out other duties as required by the manager.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in a Quality Control, Inspection, or similar manufacturing role.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and inspection plans.
- Confident use of standard measuring equipment (verniers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.).
- Strong attention to detail with a methodical, structured approach to inspection.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for completing records and liaising across teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy production environment.
Desirable
- Recognised qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Quality, or a related discipline.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 or equivalent quality management systems.
- Experience with first-article inspection (FAI) and customer-specific quality requirements.
- Awareness of NDT methods (visual, dye penetrant, ultrasonic) and certification processes.
- Trained in root cause analysis techniques (e.g. 5 Whys, Fishbone, 8D).
- Forklift / pallet truck licence.
