2x Permanent post & 2 x fixed term ( 6 month initially and extend to 12 months max)
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated doctors for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+ Equivalent) in Neurosurgery within our dynamic regional Neurosurgical Department. This post offers an excellent opportunity for a registrar-level doctor to develop advanced clinical and operative experience within a high-volume tertiary neurosurgical service.
The successful candidate will work alongside experienced consultant neurosurgeons and multidisciplinary teams, contributing to the delivery of comprehensive emergency and elective neurosurgical care. The post is designed to support the development of operative skills, clinical decision-making, leadership, education and research, making it an ideal opportunity for doctors preparing for national training, fellowship, CESR or consultant practice.
Although this is a non-training post, the department has a strong commitment to education and professional development, with opportunities to participate in teaching, audit, quality improvement and clinical research.
Note : - For the 6 months fixed-term contracts, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks. This means the contract will begin when the candidate starts the role and may be slightly shorter.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Provide high-quality care to patients admitted under the Neurosurgery service.
- Participate in the assessment and management of emergency neurosurgical referrals.
- Undertake ward rounds, inpatient management and peri-operative care.
- Assist with, and progressively undertake, neurosurgical procedures appropriate to their experience and competence under consultant supervision.
- Participate in elective operating lists, outpatient clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Supervise and support junior medical staff and medical students.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, morbidity and mortality meetings, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in departmental teaching and continuing professional development.
- Participate in research activities and publications, where appropriate.
The post is based at Queen’s Hospital in Romford. Both fixed-term and substantive permanent contract options are available. Salary will be in accordance with the appropriate resident doctor pay scale and the post is subject to the 2016 Terms and Conditions of Service for locally employed doctors.
The post-holder will participate in a full rota, including registrar-level on-call duties, providing emergency neurosurgical assessment and management under consultant supervision. Please see the attached example rota.
We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.
They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.
We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
