About Birdswell Partners
We are the finance team for businesses that are scaling. Not a bolt-on. Not a consultant. A proper, embedded finance function — built to grow with our clients. Based in Ilfracombe, North Devon, We work with a portfolio of growing owner-managed businesses and high-growth startups, delivering their finance function end-to-end: from day-to-day bookkeeping and management accounts through to strategic financial planning, fundraising and exits. Our client relationships are long-term, hands-on and genuinely varied. We’re early-stage and growing fast.
The Role
This is a senior delivery role with real client-facing responsibility. You’ll own the finance function for a portfolio of clients — varied businesses, different sectors, different challenges. You’ll work closely with our founder, be the main point of contact for clients day-to-day, and play a central part in how Birdswell delivers and grows. No two months look the same. As we scale, so does this role.
We’re open to full-time or part-time arrangements — a minimum of three days per week. We’ll consider flexible start and finish times, compressed hours, and a mix of office and remote working. If you’re a qualified finance professional looking to return to work or step back from full-time hours without stepping back from a meaningful role, this is worth a conversation.
What You’ll Do
You will be responsible for the delivery of the finance function for a portfolio of clients. This will include
- Oversee bookkeeping and transaction processing
- Manage payroll and HMRC submissions
- Take responsibility for core compliance (VAT, Statutory Accounts and Corporation Tax)
- Produce clear client reporting packs — not just boiler plate reporting. We produce high quality MI, industry specific KPIs and forward looking forecasting.
- Own client relationships directly — you’re the first point of contact, not a back-room processor
- Support budgeting, forecasting and cash flow planning for clients going through growth or funding events
- Support on more complex projects — financial modelling, business planning and strategic finance projects alongside our Founder
What We’re Looking For
- ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified — or a finalist with strong relevant experience
- Solid technical accounting — management accounts, month-end, statutory basics; able to work with limited supervision
- Confident with Xero or equivalent cloud accounting software
- Experience in an accounting practice or multi-client environment is a strong advantage
- Strong communicator — our clients are business owners, not finance people; you need to translate numbers into plain language
- Based in or within commutable distance of Ilfracombe / North Devon
