Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and qualified Climbing Arborist to take on a team leader role within our busy arboricultural operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a small ground crew, delivering a wide range of tree surgery works to the highest professional standards, and ensuring all operations are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with current industry legislation and best practice.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to an ambitious arborist who is looking to develop their career while continuing to work on the tools.
Key Responsibilities
Climbing & Technical Operations
- Carry out aerial tree surgery using SRT and DdRT/MRS climbing techniques
- Perform crown reductions, crown lifts, crown thinning, dead-wooding, and formative pruning in accordance with BS 3998
- Undertake sectional and straight felling of trees of all sizes
- Conduct rigging and dismantling operations using appropriate equipment and techniques
- Operate aerial work platforms (AWP/MEWP) where required
- Carry out stump grinding, hedge cutting, and site clearance works as required
Team Leadership & Site Management
- Lead and supervise a ground crew of 2–3 operatives on site, ensuring safe working practices at all times
- Brief the team daily, conduct toolbox talks, and complete Dynamic Risk Assessments (DRA) and Method Statements
- Manage equipment, tools, and vehicles allocated to the team; ensure daily checks are completed and reported
- Act as first point of contact on site for clients, maintaining a professional and courteous manner at all times
- Ensure works are completed on time, to specification, and within budget
- Accurately complete job sheets, waste transfer notes, timesheets, and any other documentation as required
- Monitor the quality of work carried out by team members and provide coaching and feedback
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with current Health & Safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER, LOLER, and COSHH
- Carry out daily pre-use checks on all equipment including chainsaws, chippers, and climbing equipment
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, including Arboricultural Association guidance and British Standards
- Report near-misses, incidents, and accidents promptly in accordance with company procedure
- Enforce the use of appropriate PPE at all times
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Certifications
- NPTC / City & Guilds Climbing & Aerial Rescue
- NPTC CS30 & CS31 – Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting
- NPTC CS38 & CS39 – Felling & Processing Trees up to 380mm
- NPTC PA1 & PA6 – Pesticide Application (desirable but not essential)
- First Aid at Work certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable Qualifications
- NPTC Stump Grinding certificate
- IPAF MEWP Operator licence (3a/3b)
- LANTRA Awards Chipper Operator
- Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor status awareness
- NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent H&S qualification
- HGV or C1 licence
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in professional arboricultural operations
- Demonstrable experience leading a small team on site
- Sound knowledge of tree species identification and tree biology
- Competent in the use and maintenance of arboricultural tools and machinery
- Strong communication skills – able to liaise professionally with clients, colleagues, and management
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, site plans, and risk assessments
- High level of self-motivation and ability to manage time effectively
- Commitment to quality workmanship and continuous professional development

Working Hours
Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 07:00–16:00, with some flexibility required to meet operational demands. Overtime may be available.
