The Opportunity
- Manage a portfolio of accounts and compliance assignments independently from planning through to near-completion, with full accountability before manager review.
- Manage VAT compliance requirements, including the preparation and review of VAT returns, while identifying opportunities to provide practical advice and support to clients.
- Deliver reliable, accurate statutory accounts, management accounts and related compliance work for a varied client base, with practical advisory awareness built naturally into the client relationship.
- Develop people skills through coaching and reviewing the work of seniors and trainees.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Delivery
- Manage accounts assignments from planning through to near-completion, including an initial check of tax computations where appropriate.
- Prepare and review management accounts and statutory accounts for a range of clients.
- Prepare and review VAT returns for a range of clients, ensuring compliance requirements are met and opportunities for advisory support are identified.
- Review tax computations at the appropriate level where required, recognising that broader exposure to tax work is beneficial but not essential to the role.
- Identify technical issues and escalate clearly to the manager.
- Where applicable, coordinate outsourced bookkeeping or accounts elements: track status, review returned work and maintain quality before passing to the manager.
Technical & Compliance
- Maintain working knowledge of UK GAAP (FRS 102).
- Ensure all work meets regulatory and quality requirements.
- Support AML and GDPR compliance.
Review & Supervision
- Review work produced by seniors and trainees; give clear, constructive feedback.
- Support junior development through consistent coaching.
- Escalate quality concerns to the manager promptly.
Client Engagement
- Manage day-to-day client communication professionally.
- Attend client meetings alongside or representing the manager.
- Build working relationships with client finance contacts and business owners, providing practical guidance and identifying opportunities to add value through advisory support.
Planning & Coordination
- Plan and resource assignments efficiently in line with Retain.
- Monitor WIP and act promptly when overruns are developing.
- Manage own time effectively across concurrent assignments.
People Leadership
- Coach and support seniors and trainees on assignments day-to-day.
- Create an environment where questions and different approaches are welcomed.
Commercial Awareness
- Understand billing targets and efficient delivery. No external BD expectation at this grade.
Systems & Digital
- CCH, Retain, Microsoft 365 and Teams proficiently.
- Cloud accounting platform awareness: Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent and Sage Online.
- Experience of desktop accounting software, including Sage 50.
- Developing Power BI awareness.
Quality & Standards
- Ensure assignments meet quality standards before passing to the manager.
- Maintain consistent attention to detail.
- Maintain CPD post-qualification.
Qualifications & Experience
- ACA/ACCA/CA — qualified. Typically two to three years post-qualification accounts and advisory experience.
- Strong UK GAAP (FRS 102) knowledge.
Technical Skills
- Technical review capability across statutory accounts, management accounts, VAT compliance and related advisory work.
- UK GAAP (FRS 102) across a range of entity types.
- CCH, Excel, cloud accounting platforms and Sage software proficiency.
Communication Skills
- Professional and confident in client and manager communication.
- Skilled at giving clear, fair feedback to juniors.
- Handles client queries proactively.
