We are now seeking a practical, hard-working Kitchen Porter / Maintenance & Gardening Assistant to support our kitchen team, maintain our grounds, and assist with the general upkeep and safety compliance of the hotel.
Your Role
This is a highly varied and dynamic role combining kitchen support, light property maintenance, seasonal gardening, and essential safety checks. You will play a vital part in keeping our kitchen running smoothly, ensuring our grounds make a stunning first impression, and helping the hotel remain safe, well-presented, and fully functional for our guests and team.
Key Responsibilities
Kitchen Support:
- Assist chefs by washing dishes, pots, and utensils efficiently during service.
- Keep the kitchen, storage, and back-of-house areas exceptionally clean, tidy, and organized.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling areas in accordance with hotel standards.
Gardening & Grounds Keeping:
- Maintain the hotel’s lawns, flowerbeds, and borders (mowing, weeding, and pruning).
- Ensure outdoor guest areas, pathways, and patios are kept swept, tidy, and clear of debris.
- Assist with seasonal outdoor tasks, such as planting, watering, and preparing the grounds for winter.
Maintenance & Safety Compliance:
- Carry out routine health and safety checks, including weekly fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, and maintaining accurate compliance logs.
- Carry out basic indoor and outdoor maintenance and repair tasks, painting, minor fixes, changing bulbs, etc
- Help with deliveries, heavy lifting, and correct stock rotation.
- Support the wider hotel team with occasional odd jobs and event setups.
- Follow all health, safety, hygiene, and COSHH standards at all times.
What We’re Looking For
- A full, clean driving license is essential for this role.
- Previous experience as a kitchen porter, handyman, gardener, or in a role involving basic building compliance/safety checks (preferred but not essential, as training will be provided).
- A practical, hands-on approach, strong attention to detail, and a genuine willingness to "muck in" where needed.
- Basic DIY, maintenance, or gardening skills and a love for working outdoors.
- A positive, reliable attitude and the ability to work well as part of a close-knit team.
- Excellent punctuality, reliability, and pride in your work.
- Flexibility to balance kitchen shifts with daytime outdoor, maintenance, and compliance tasks.
