Body Shop Technical Lead/ Estimator
Location: Braintree
Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm, with 1 Saturday in 3 and additional hours as required to fulfil the role
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and capable Technical Lead to take responsibility for both estimating and the day-to-day running of our Braintree workshop.
This is deliberately a dual-role position. We are looking for someone who can combine strong technical knowledge and estimating ability with the leadership, organisation and practical skills required to run and control a busy workshop effectively.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring work is accurately estimated, efficiently planned and delivered to a high standard, while supporting and managing the workshop team.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating
- Prepare accurate and commercially viable estimates for work.
- Assess vehicles/jobs and determine the appropriate repair requirements.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers, insurers and other stakeholders as required.
- Ensure estimates are completed promptly and accurately.
- Monitor work against estimates and identify any additional requirements.
- Use technical knowledge to ensure repairs are planned correctly and efficiently.
Workshop Management
- Take day-to-day responsibility for the operation and performance of the Braintree workshop.
- Plan and allocate work to the workshop team.
- Monitor job progress, productivity and quality.
- Ensure vehicles/jobs are completed within agreed timescales.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and customer service.
- Identify and resolve technical or operational issues.
- Ensure the workshop is organised, efficient and well controlled.
- Support and lead workshop staff, providing guidance and technical direction.
- Ensure company procedures, health and safety requirements and industry standards are followed.
Technical Leadership
- Act as the technical point of contact for the workshop.
- Provide advice and support on complex repairs and technical issues.
- Help develop the skills and knowledge of the workshop team.
- Continuously look for ways to improve workshop efficiency, quality and profitability.
- Work closely with management to achieve business and operational targets.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced within an automotive workshop and/or estimating environment.
- Technically competent with a strong understanding of vehicle repair.
- Confident managing people and controlling workshop operations.
- Organised, commercially aware and able to prioritise effectively.
- Comfortable dealing with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.
- Able to work independently and take responsibility for decisions.
- A strong communicator and natural problem solver.
- Able to balance estimating responsibilities with the practical demands of running a workshop.
- Professional, reliable and committed to delivering high standards.
