We are looking for an experienced and reliable Accounts Assistant / Purchase Ledger Controller to join our small, supportive accounts team.
The role will have a particular focus on purchase ledger management and control, while also providing support across the wider accounts function. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable working in a small team, where flexibility and the ability to provide cover for colleagues during holidays and other absences are important.
The Role
The role will include:
- managing the purchase ledger from invoice receipt through to payment preparation;
- processing and coding supplier invoices;
- reconciling supplier statements and resolving discrepancies;
- preparing supplier payment runs for review;
- dealing with supplier queries professionally and promptly;
- monitoring aged creditors and maintaining supplier records;
- processing CIS deductions and supporting CIS return preparation;
- correctly identifying and processing Domestic Reverse Charge VAT transactions;
- assisting with bank, card and control account reconciliations;
- supporting nominal ledger accuracy and month-end preparation;
- supporting sales ledger, credit control, payroll administration and wider finance tasks where required;
- providing cover for colleagues during holidays and periods of absence.
About You
We are looking for someone with previous experience in an accounts, purchase ledger, finance assistant, bookkeeping or similar role.
You should have:

- experience of purchase ledger processing and supplier statement reconciliations;
- a sound understanding of CIS and Domestic Reverse Charge VAT within construction or a related sector;
- good attention to detail and a high level of accuracy;
- confidence in investigating and resolving accounting discrepancies;
- good communication skills when dealing with suppliers and internal colleagues;
- a practical and flexible approach to work;
- the ability to work independently while also contributing positively as part of a small team.
Experience within construction, shopfitting, manufacturing or another project-based business would be an advantage. AAT qualification or current AAT study would also be beneficial, although this is not essential.
Working Pattern
This is ideally a full-time role, but we will consider part-time applicants for the right candidate. For part-time applicants, we would need a regular working pattern that provides good weekly coverage and supports key finance deadlines, including month-end, payment runs and payroll-related activity.
