Joinery Manager
Location: Barnstaple
Contract: Full-time, permanent
Salary: Dependant on Experience
About the role
We’re looking for a hands-on, commercially minded Joinery Manager to lead our workshop operations end-to-end. You’ll own planning, production, quality, and team leadership—delivering high-standard bespoke joinery on time and on budget.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and develop a team of joiners, bench hands, CNC operators, and fitters; set workloads, targets, and training plans.
- Plan production from drawings/specifications, create cutting lists, and schedule machinery and labour.
- Oversee procurement of timber, sheet materials, ironmongery, and finishes; manage supplier relationships and stock.
- Ensure quality control at each stage; sign off prototypes and final assemblies to client standards.
- Translate technical drawings (AutoCAD/Inventor/SolidWorks or similar) into practical build methods.
- Drive H&S compliance, safe systems of work, and housekeeping across the workshop and spray area.
- Monitor KPIs (OTIF delivery, rework rates, material yield, labour efficiency) and implement continuous improvements (5S/lean).
- Collaborate with Design, Projects, and Site teams to resolve issues and sequence installs.
- Manage budgets, job costing, and change control; report progress and risks proactively.
- Champion right-first-time culture and foster craft excellence.
About you
- Proven experience managing a joinery or bespoke manufacturing workshop.
- Strong technical knowledge of hardwoods, veneers, laminates, sheet materials, and cabinetry construction.
- Confident reading technical drawings and producing cutting lists; CNC experience a plus.
- Solid understanding of finishing processes (lacquer, oil, paint) and tolerances/fit on site.
- Practical leadership style—coaches teams, sets clear standards, and tackles problems early.
- Organised and commercially aware; comfortable with scheduling, costing, and supplier management.
- Up-to-date knowledge of H&S, PUWER, COSHH, and safe machine operation.
Nice to have
- Experience in high-end residential, commercial fit-out, hospitality, or retail environments.
- Knowledge of lean/5S, ERP/MRP systems, and basic CAD/CAM.
- CSCS/SMSTS/SSSTS or equivalent certifications.
What we offer
- Competitive salary
- Training and development with clear progression.
- 21 days holiday + bank holidays, pension, and employee perks.
- A collaborative team that values craftsmanship and innovation.
