Job Title: Children and Young People’s Counsellor
Location: The Relationships Centre Leicestershire and various school settings.
Hours: 13.5 hours a week increasing to 29.5 hours from January 2027
Salary: £28,860 pro rata (37 hours)
Probationary period: 6 months
Main purposes of the job
To provide counselling and therapeutic support to young people aged 8-18 who are experiencing a range of mental health difficulties including emotional distress, low level depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, self-harm, suicidal thoughts/feelings and the effects of family change, conflict, bereavement and bullying.
To facilitate and deliver low to moderate therapeutic support workshops. Delivering the workshops in schools and community venues.
This job role will mainly be based at The Relationships Centre, Leicester or other authorized premises including schools. The role is delivered in the day and one evening there is a possibility of a Saturday.
Accountability
Reports to Service Manager and Clinical Supervisor.
Key Tasks
To work collaboratively with children, young people and families within a school and community settings as well as in The Relationships Centre to facilitate and deliver brief, low intensity, evidence-based interventions and strategies to groups of children, young people and parents. To facilitate shared decision making; and delivering brief, low intensity, evidence-based interventions on a one to one or group basis.
- To work in partnership with parents/carers to empower them and to enable them to achieve better outcomes for their children.
- To collaborate effectively with other professionals.
- To assess and engage children, young people and families where there is a concern regarding common mental health difficulties
- To deliver effective low intensity interventions with children, young people and families.
- To be responsible for case note recording, contributing to case reports.
- To undertake case management supervision, clinical skills supervision and university supervision.
- To contribute to service development.
- To apply safeguarding and child protection procedures
- Agrees with the aims of The Relationships Centre and committed to anti-discriminatory practice.

- Full driving license, willing to travel and access to a car
- Be flexible to commute in Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland on a regular basis.
- To co-deliver a programme of work effectively.
- Assist in the organisation and set up of group work.
Applicants must demonstrate in their application form that they currently use the skills outlined below or have used them previously in employment, education, training, volunteering etc.
Education/Knowledge
· A minimum in Level 4 diploma therapeutic counselling with children and young people or its equivalent
· Evidence of 200 hours placement with children and young people aged 8-18
· A Degree in a social science
· Child Protection Training
· Safeguarding Training
Experience
· A good amount of experience working with children, young people and families in a counselling capacity.
· Experience of providing brief interventions for children, young people and families.
Skills/Abilities/Qualities
· The ability to listen and communicate effectively with children, young people, families and school staff.
· Able to work as part of a team.
· Able to record case notes deploying the necessary standard of writing and IT skills accurately and clearly.
· Able to apply The Relationships Centre safeguarding and child protection procedures.
· Have a driving licence, access to a car and willing to commute on a regular basis as well as various school placements.
· Positive, proactive, reflective, assertive, robust and flexible
· To act as a representative for the organisation.
· To attend supervision.
· To be able to manage own caseload.
· To work under pressure to achieve course requirements.
. Willing to undertake mandatory safeguarding training.
