Department Overview
The UK Higher Education sector is changing in response to the shifts in the capacity, availability and opportunity offered by an ever-advancing range of digital technologies. The expectations of students and staff are changing continually, Technology-Integrated Learning is now an integral part of the overall student taught experience of their education.
To meet its ambitions to be a place of transformative education, the University supports staff in all aspects of their teaching through departments based within our Libraries and Learning Resources division, in Academic Services. The Delivery Manager post sits within the Education Technologies and Learning Environments Unit.
Role Summary
Education Technology and Learning Environments (ETLE) team works in a flexible and agile way, and as such this role is agile in nature, meaning you will have the opportunity to work on initiatives that span ETLE's full range of activities. Whilst initially focusing on the development and delivery of key digital education initiatives, the Delivery Manager will support and manage designated projects across the Education Technologies and Learning Environments Unit to support the realisation of its strategic ambitions. This will include tracking and monitoring progress against key milestones, developing reporting and collaborating with a broad range of colleagues across the University and beyond.
The Delivery Manager plays a vital role in the team, taking ownership of a range of initiatives spanning the unit's activity, including learning technology platforms and VLE management, digital learning design and development, learning environment and physical space management, and staff development and support for teaching with technology. They support the development and operationalisation of strategic projects across all aspects of the unit, managing varied and exciting projects from conception through to delivery — including curriculum technology rollouts and cross-university partnerships. They also support the operational delivery of the unit's aims, working flexibly across the unit and engaging with key stakeholders including academic departments, IT services, and external technology partners.
Main Duties
- Responsible for the delivery of ETLE related initiatives spanning the full range of the unit’s activities, working closely with key colleagues. This may include some or all of the following:
- developing project plans, identifying (as appropriate) key performance indicators and milestones.
- identifying opportunities for developing new initiatives, gain support for these, create project plans and deliver.
- developing operational plans for initiatives and supporting the delivery of these with key colleagues and departments.
- Monitoring, reviewing and auditing progress on projects, to identify and act on improvements to effectiveness, efficiency and delivery.
- reporting on progress including the development of reporting mechanisms including KPIs, writing or overseeing the creation of reports (e.g. on project budgetary management, programme pipeline updates, dashboards etc.), and presenting to appropriate meetings such as SLT, Programme Board or to other key stakeholders.
- assessing and escalating as you deem appropriate issues and risks, including coordinating the maintenance of and monitoring risk registers.
- Stakeholder management, ensuring effective liaison with ETLE partners, funders, Project Boards, SLT and cross-University colleagues as appropriate.
- managing project resources efficiently and effectively, including budgets, and ensure project documentation is maintained.
- providing executive support to senior committees, work streams and working groups as required; setting agendas, collating and distributing papers and minutes and ensuring follow up action is taken.
- Lead a small team on a project, matrix or line management basis as required, providing a motivational environment where staff are challenged, developed, encouraged and supported to achieve outstanding results. This could include managing staff performance or supporting resource management across the unit as part of the management team.
- Coordinate the organisation of conferences/ meetings/ workshops/ dissemination events relating to ETLE as required.
- Develop and deliver communication strategy, including communications to support the delivery of the unit’s activities, which may include developing, for example, newsletters, briefings for stakeholders and/or websites or other social media.
- Ensure that priorities are balanced, taking action to achieve agreed deliverables against timelines.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of project management and change management methodologies and apply this in the role.
- Support the team with managing change as the unit grows and realises its ambitions.
- Source, analyse and develop insights from the data to inform evaluation and review of initiatives.
- Build an in-depth understanding of the context of the unit and use this to identify opportunities for innovation.
- Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
- Actively manage equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenge unacceptable behaviour.
- Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working.
- Work in an agile and flexible manner, supporting with resourcing needs across the unit as required.
- Any other duties commensurate with the grade.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
- Qualified to Degree level or equivalent plus practical managerial experience or significant relevant experience demonstrated through increasingly more demanding roles evidencing the experience necessary for this role.
- Proven track record of successful project and/or change management, preferably having good understanding of a range of project management methodologies and tools such as Prince2.
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly, analyse data, and produce reports. Excellent people-management skills with the ability to inspire and lead colleagues.
- Values driven, aligning behaviour with the core University of Birmingham values; ambitious, innovative, open, collaborative, and responsible.
- Excellent budgetary management skills and experience.
- Highly proficient IT skills, including the MS Office and website editing software. You should be confident and able to quickly learn new IT skills and software packages as required.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, relationship building and influencing skills with the ability to deal confidently and credibly with a range of internal and external stakeholders/contacts.
- Excellent organisational and multi-tasking skills with a methodical approach to work and the ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines.
- Experience of working in a complex organisation and working within a matrix management context.
Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
