About the Role
Crystal Insurance PLC provides commercial insurance solutions designed to help businesses manage operational, financial and property-related risks. We are looking for an experienced Assistant Commercial Underwriter to support the assessment, pricing and administration of commercial insurance policies.
You will work closely with senior underwriters, brokers and internal teams to review new business applications, process renewals and ensure underwriting decisions are supported by accurate information. The role requires strong attention to detail, sound commercial judgement and the ability to manage a varied workload within agreed service standards.
This position is suitable for someone with previous experience in commercial insurance, underwriting support, broking or policy administration who is ready to take on greater responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Assessment: Review commercial insurance applications, supporting documents and risk information to identify key underwriting considerations.
Policy Pricing: Assist with calculating premiums, applying rating guidelines and preparing quotations within agreed underwriting authority.
New Business Support: Process new business submissions and ensure all required information is complete before referral or approval.
Renewal Management: Review existing policies approaching renewal and prepare updated terms based on claims history, risk changes and underwriting guidance.
Broker Communication: Respond to broker enquiries, request additional information and provide clear updates on quotations, renewals and policy amendments.
Underwriting Referrals: Escalate complex, unusual or higher-value risks to senior underwriters with a clear summary of findings and recommendations.
Policy Administration: Maintain accurate policy records and process endorsements, cancellations, adjustments and documentation.
Compliance: Follow regulatory requirements, internal underwriting procedures and delegated authority limits.
Portfolio Monitoring: Support the review of policy performance, loss ratios, claims trends and other portfolio information.
Customer Service: Help ensure brokers and clients receive accurate, professional and timely support throughout the underwriting process.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with claims, finance, compliance and operations teams to resolve policy and account issues.
Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, data quality and service efficiency.
What We Are Looking For
Experience: At least 2 to 4 years of experience in commercial insurance, underwriting support, insurance broking, policy administration or a related role.
Commercial Insurance Knowledge: Understanding of common commercial insurance products such as property, liability, motor fleet, professional indemnity or business interruption.
Risk Awareness: Ability to review risk information, identify missing details and recognise cases requiring further investigation.
Numerical Skills: Confidence working with premiums, rates, claims figures and financial information.
Attention to Detail: Strong accuracy when reviewing applications, issuing quotations and updating policy records.
Communication: Clear and professional communication with brokers, clients, underwriters and internal teams.
Organisation: Ability to manage multiple submissions, renewals and deadlines in a busy insurance environment.
Decision-Making: A practical and balanced approach to assessing information and making recommendations within established guidelines.
Systems Knowledge: Comfortable using underwriting platforms, policy administration systems, spreadsheets and document-management tools.
Qualifications: Progress toward a relevant insurance qualification, such as CII certification, is preferred but not essential.
Mindset: Commercially aware, dependable and willing to take ownership of assigned underwriting tasks.
Pay: £2,700.00-£3,000.00 per month
