Are you a skilled IT professional looking for a more balanced role that combines hands-on advanced troubleshooting with long-term endpoint design?
Cheltenham College is seeking an experienced, approachable, proactive Senior IT Technician who will take technical ownership of our diverse endpoint environment, managing over 1,400 predominately Apple, endpoints.
You will join a well-resourced IT Support team of seven. While our four front-line technicians handle initial user support and service fulfilment, you will act as the escalation point for complex device, operating system, and deployment issues across the College.
The Role
This is an active, hands-on role where you will divide your time between advanced device engineering and resolving escalated user support queries. You will focus on:
- Endpoint Architecture & Management: Configure, maintain, and optimize our Microsoft Intune and Jamf (Pro/School) environments. Design and deploy device compliance policies, configuration profiles, and automated patch management workflows.
- Advanced Escalation & Support: Take ownership of complex 2nd line support tickets escalated by our front-line technicians. Diagnose and resolve advanced device, software application, and user profile issues.
- Application Packaging & Deployment: Build, test, and deploy software packages across macOS, iOS and Windows operating systems, ensuring minimal disruption to teaching and operations.
- Supplier & Project Collaboration: Partner with our Infrastructure Specialist on cross-department projects (e.g. identity management, security baselines). Work closely with external specialist suppliers for higher-risk configurations, acting as the internal expert to test, document, and transition changes into daily operations.
- Teamwork & Occasional Saturday Support: Help with daily first-line tickets during busy periods, and cover the standalone Saturday morning shift (1-in-6 during term time).
- Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Create clear technical documentation and standard operating procedures to empower front-line staff to resolve device issues before escalation.
We are looking for an approachable, self-motivated problem solver who is equally comfortable deep-tuning a deployment profile or speaking face-to-face with a teacher to resolve an issue.
You do not need to be a fully formed Jamf or Intune guru on day one. If you have rock-solid technical foundations, a service-first mindset, and the drive to develop deeper expertise, we will fully fund your professional certifications in Jamf, Apple Device Management, and Microsoft Intune.
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Strong Troubleshooting Foundations: Proven experience diagnosing, repairing, and supporting macOS, iOS and Windows desktop environments at scale.
- A Service-First Mindset: Clear, empathetic communication. You can translate complex technical bugs into simple, reassuring instructions for non-technical staff and pupils.
- Independence & Reliability: The confidence and focus to manage your own workload and operate autonomously.
- A Growth Mindset: A logical approach to learning. You have a genuine interest in modern automated device management and the aptitude to learn new systems quickly.
It would be fantastic if you also had (or are ready to learn):
- Practical exposure to MDM platforms (Microsoft Intune / Endpoint Manager, Jamf Pro, or Jamf School).
- Familiarity with Apple School Manager (ASM) and volume purchasing workflows.
- Exposure to cloud identity management (Microsoft Entra ID / Active Directory).
- Existing professional certifications (e.g., Jamf Certified Associate/Tech, Microsoft Modern Desktop Administrator).
Working in an educational environment like Cheltenham College is distinct from corporate IT. It requires a specific mindset:
- The Academic Rhythm: School IT operates in seasons. Term-time is fast-paced and highly interactive, requiring rapid support to minimize lost teaching time. Conversely, school holidays offer quiet, uninterrupted windows to execute projects, rebuild device images, and upgrade systems.
- A Community Role: You will be a visible face on campus. Success in this role relies as much on building positive relationships with teachers, support staff, and pupils as it does on technical engineering.
- Be part of a friendly and supportive school community.
- Work in a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same.
- Join a professional and collaborative IT team supporting modern technologies and digital services.
- Opportunities for professional development and training.
- Competitive pension and staff benefits including: Lunch during term time, Executive Pension Scheme, complimentary membership to College's gyms and pool as well as discounts at local retailers, health & wellbeing and hospitality venues.
