We are looking for a confident, experienced and proactive GCSE Tutor to support a bright and academically capable Year 11 student with Autism and anxiety who is preparing to work towards his GCSEs and transition into Post-16 education.
This is an excellent opportunity for a tutor who understands how to build trust with autistic young people who have experienced prolonged school absence and mental health challenges. The successful tutor will play a vital role in helping rebuild confidence in education while preparing the student for GCSE examinations in Summer 2027.
About the Role
You will provide 1:1 tuition in:
- GCSE English Language (AQA)
- GCSE Maths (Edexcel Foundation)
- GCSE Combined Science (AQA)
- GCSE English Literature (where appropriate)
- Potentially GCSE History as confidence develops
The learner's long-term goal is to achieve five GCSEs in order to progress to A Levels and college in September 2027.
This placement requires an education provider able to support the learner through to GCSE examinations, including arranging an appropriate exam centre and facilitating exams.
About the Student
This young person is academically able and enjoys learning when he feels safe and comfortable.
He:
- Has diagnoses of Autism and Anxiety
- Has experienced significant school absence since December 2023 due to autistic burnout and mental health difficulties
- Is capable of working at GCSE level when emotionally regulated
- Enjoys English, Science and Maths
- Wants to return to education and ultimately attend college
- Is transitioning into Post-16 provision from September 2026
His interests include:
- Playing guitar
- Music (especially Pink Floyd)
- Gaming
- Movies
- Fitness
- Spending time with his grandparents
Previous experience has shown that he builds trust far more successfully with male role models, and they are looking for someone who can confidently lead sessions whilst remaining calm, patient and supportive.
This is not a role for someone who takes a passive approach—the successful tutor must be able to gently lead the learning process whilst respecting the student's anxiety and communication preferences.
The Ideal Tutor Will Have
- Experience supporting autistic young people
- Experience working with anxiety, school avoidance or emotionally based school non-attendance
- Strong GCSE subject knowledge across English, Maths and Science
- Confidence delivering structured 1:1 tuition
- A calm, consistent and reassuring approach
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to build trust over time without applying unnecessary pressure
Experience supporting students preparing for GCSEs following prolonged absence would be highly desirable.
Teaching Approach
Success in this placement will depend far more on relationship-building than rushing into academic content.
The successful tutor will:
- Build trust gradually before increasing expectations
- Keep sessions predictable and structured
- Use calm, low-pressure communication
- Avoid putting the student on the spot with direct questioning
- Communicate through written methods (such as Teams or email) where appropriate
- Break learning into manageable chunks
- Support confidence as well as academic progress
- Be patient and persistent during periods of lower engagement
The learner benefits from tutors who are confident, encouraging and quietly take control of the learning process while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere.
Hours & Location
- 10 hours per week
- Home-based tuition in the Pettaugh area
- Morning sessions preferred
- Afternoons should be avoided, as requested by the family
- Start Date: September 2026
- Long-term placement through to GCSE examinations in Summer 2027
Essential Requirements
- Experience teaching GCSE English, Maths and Science
- Experience supporting students with Autism and mental health needs
- Male tutor essential for this placement
- Ability to build strong therapeutic relationships
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
- Right to work in the UK
