Associate Structural Engineer

As our pipeline continues to strengthen, with particular focus on the renewable energy market, we have an excellent opportunity for a highly capable and commercially astute structural engineer to take on a senior leadership role within our Building Structures team. As an Associate Structural Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the technical and strategic direction of multidisciplinary building projects across the Energy sector, alongside a mix of residential, public sector, and commercial developments. This role is ideal for someone who brings both exceptional technical expertise and a proven ability to lead teams, influence clients, and contribute to the growth and success of the business. You will be instrumental in driving innovation, ensuring high-quality delivery, and supporting the continued evolution of engineering at Tetra Tech.
Purpose and Scope of the Role
You will join the Building Structures team in Glasgow, where you will take responsibility for leading the structural design and delivery of steel, concrete and masonry structures across a diverse project portfolio. Acting as a senior point of accountability, you will oversee project performance, ensuring technical excellence, programme adherence, and commercial efficiency. Working closely with mechanical, electrical, architecture, fire engineering, and other specialist disciplines, you will ensure that structural solutions are fully coordinated, compliant, and aligned with both client aspirations and wider business objectives.
Your day-to-day responsibilities will include providing high-level technical leadership across multiple projects, overseeing and approving BIM and CAD outputs, leading internal and external design meetings, and maintaining strong client relationships. You will adopt a proactive and strategic mindset, identifying opportunities for innovation, improving delivery processes, and contributing to business development activities, including bids and client engagement.
Technical Leadership in Steel and Concrete Design
A high level of technical competence across steel, and concrete design is essential. You will be confident leading complex structural analysis, directing design strategy, and reviewing detailed calculations to ensure robust and efficient engineering solutions. You will provide oversight of BIM and CAD models, ensuring accuracy, coordination, and constructability. Extensive experience with industry-standard software, particularly Tekla Structural Designer, is required. You will have strong knowledge of steel portal frame design, particularly in Energy and industrial developments, alongside a deep understanding of structural behaviour, fire performance, and connection detailing. An appreciation of embodied carbon, low-carbon materials, and Whole Life Carbon Assessments is important, supporting our commitment to sustainable and responsible engineering design.
Effective Participation in Meetings and Stakeholder Engagement
You will lead internal technical discussions, design reviews, and project coordination meetings, providing clear and authoritative engineering input. As a senior representative of the business, you will regularly engage with clients, contractors, and external stakeholders, offering strategic advice and ensuring alignment with project objectives. Your ability to communicate complex engineering concepts with clarity and confidence will be essential in building trust and influencing key decisions. Through strong relationship management and commercial awareness, you will contribute to successful project outcomes and help secure repeat business opportunities.
Mentorship and Collaborative Teamworking
A core element of this role is leading and developing a high-performing team. You will mentor engineers, graduates, and technicians, supporting their technical development and progression towards chartership. You will foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative culture, encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous professional development. As a senior member of the team, you will play an active role in recruitment, retention, and capability building, helping to shape the long-term strength of the discipline. Collaboration remains central to our multidisciplinary approach, and you will work closely with colleagues across planning, building services, architecture, and environmental teams to deliver integrated and innovative solutions.
Multidisciplinary Project Delivery
You will be fully accountable for the successful delivery of Building Structures projects across all stages, from concept design through to construction. Your experience will extend beyond primary structural frames to include coordination of external works, drainage, and interfaces with other disciplines. You will take a holistic view of project delivery, ensuring that engineering solutions are practical, efficient, and aligned with broader project goals. Your leadership, adaptability, and ability to manage complexity will be key to delivering high-quality outcomes and driving continuous improvement across the team.
Qualifications, Training, and Professional Experience
You will hold a degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering accredited by the ICE and/or IStructE. Chartered status is essential for this role. You will bring significant practical experience, a strong record of delivering complex projects, and demonstrable leadership capability in managing teams, clients, and project performance.
