We’re looking for an experienced Credit Controller to take ownership of credit control and debt collection across our client base.
This is an important role within the Finance team, responsible for maintaining a healthy and uninterrupted income stream through proactive debt chasing, accurate reconciliation, effective payment processes and commercially sensible conversations with clients.
You’ll be expected to be confident discussing outstanding balances, negotiating payment arrangements and taking ownership of problem accounts. At the same time, you’ll have the opportunity to help improve the processes and technology behind invoicing, debt creation and collections.
This would suit someone who is disciplined, commercially minded and confident dealing with people, but who also enjoys improving processes and making better use of technology.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Control & Debt Collection
- Take ownership of outstanding debts across all revenue streams and the wider client base.
- Proactively chase overdue accounts using a structured and consistent follow-up process.
- Maintain accurate records of outstanding balances, payment promises and client communications.
- Build strong client relationships while remaining firm, professional and persuasive when discussing money owed.
- Negotiate and agree commercially sound payment arrangements where appropriate.
- Identify potential problem accounts early and take proactive action to resolve them.
- Escalate issues where necessary, while seeking to resolve debts without unnecessarily damaging client relationships.
Reconciliation & Financial Systems
- Regularly reconcile company systems to ensure invoices, payments and outstanding balances are accurate.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies between systems promptly.
- Maintain clean, organised and accurate financial records.
- Ensure debt and income information is reliable and up to date.
Invoicing & Payment Processes
- Assist with the processes that lead to the creation of invoices, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Help improve the processes around debt creation, invoicing and debt chasing.
- Make effective use of technology to support collections, including:
- Card payment systems
- Recurring Direct Debit payments
- Direct invoicing
- Champion the increased use of automated payment methods to reduce manual chasing and improve income reliability.
Reporting & Collaboration
- Produce regular and accurate reports covering outstanding debt, aged balances and collection performance.
- Work closely with Finance and Client Services to resolve billing queries that may be preventing payment.
- Highlight recurring issues and risks within the invoicing and collections process.
- Make practical suggestions to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
What We’re Looking ForExperience
You’ll ideally have:
- Proven experience working in a Credit Control / Credit Controller role.
- Experience chasing and successfully resolving outstanding debts.
- Experience within professional services or an accountancy environment would be advantageous.
- Experience reconciling financial systems and maintaining accurate financial records.
- Experience using card payment systems, recurring Direct Debit platforms and invoicing software.
- Experience with Recurly or similar recurring payment platforms would be beneficial.
- Familiarity with accounting software such as Xero or QuickBooks would also be advantageous.
