We are recruiting a Business Intelligence Developer to join our Business Intelligence Team on a fixed-term basis (5 years) to support the Trust's Electronic Patient Record (EPR) programme, with phase 1 going live in May 2027.
As EPR is implemented, some of the Trust's existing reporting will remain unchanged, some will draw on a mix of existing sources and the new EPR data repository (hosted on Google Cloud Platform), and some will be built solely from EPR data. This role will lead on the technical review of our existing reporting suite — including SQL databases, ETL processes, Power BI reports and Microsoft Fabric pipelines — ensuring queries and data infrastructure are optimised for performance, data quality and maintainability as we transition. You'll work closely with the key stakeholders and data management team to review, consolidate, update or decommission reports and underlying code, removing duplication and ensuring consistency across the reporting estate.
We're looking for someone with expert-level SQL skills, strong experience across the Microsoft BI stack (Power BI, SSRS, SSIS, Microsoft Fabric), and a good understanding of ETL and data warehouse design, ideally within an NHS or large complex organisation.
Main duties of the job:
- Design, create and maintain SQL database objects (tables, views, stored procedures, functions), ensuring optimal database design, data integrity and performance.
- Write and optimise complex SQL queries to support reporting, analysis and data extraction across the Trust.
- Develop and maintain ETL processes to load data from multiple sources, including preparing datasets for national and regional submissions.
- Build and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards and semantic models, and develop reporting solutions within Microsoft Fabric, including Fabric pipelines for data ingestion, transformation and orchestration.
- Carry out a systematic technical review of existing reports and underlying code/logic to determine what should be retained, updated to incorporate EPR data, consolidated, or decommissioned as part of the transition to EPR.
- Review existing SSRS reports and subscriptions for migration to Power BI.
- Ensure each piece of work is accompanied by clear technical documentation (data lineage, source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, refresh schedules) and handed over to the BAU BI team on completion.
- Work collaboratively with the data management team and wider BI colleagues to ensure the reporting estate is consistent, efficient and easy to maintain and update.

Technical Development & Data Engineering
Design, create and maintain SQL database objects including tables, views, stored procedures and functions, ensuring optimal database design principles, data integrity and performance.
Write complex, efficient SQL queries to support reporting, analysis and data extraction requirements across the Trust; proactively review and optimise existing queries and database objects to improve performance, maintainability and reliability.
Develop and maintain ETL processes to load data from multiple sources into SQL Server databases, as well as produce structured datasets in Excel/CSV formats for internal use and external submissions (including national and regional data returns).
Build, develop and maintain Power BI reports, dashboards and semantic models, utilising best practice in data modelling, DAX, Power Query and visual design to deliver intuitive, self-service reporting solutions across the Trust.
Develop and manage reporting solutions within Microsoft Fabric, including the creation and maintenance of Fabric pipelines for data ingestion, transformation and orchestration.
Review existing SSRS reports and subscriptions for migration to PowerBI to support operational and statutory reporting needs.
Reporting, Analysis & Information Delivery
Carry out a systematic review of existing reports, dashboards and their underlying code/logic - much of which has not been reviewed for some time - to determine what should be retained as-is, updated to incorporate EPR data, consolidated with other reports, or decommissioned as part of the transition to EPR.
Develop, design and deliver dashboards and reporting solutions from the Trust's data warehouse and the EPR data repository, and lead on discrete areas of work which evolve the reporting estate into one which is optimised for BI, consistent in its measures and definitions, and straightforward to maintain and update.
Work seamlessly with the BI business partners, data management team, and liaise directly with report area subject matter experts in clinical and operational teams, to confirm business rules and ensure the reporting layer is designed to meet internal and external reporting requirements, implementing well-defined business logic and ensuring solutions are designed to support an efficient data environment, automated for efficiency, time saving for stakeholders, and enable self-service.
To use sophisticated analysis techniques and performance management to monitor and report on progress against targets and identify where improvements in the effective and efficient delivery of services can take place.
Strategic & Operational Support
To develop solutions which support the strategic and operational BI support function and cycle for the clinical and corporate divisions, contributing alongside Business Intelligence Partners and the wider BI team to a value-added, forward-looking and wide-ranging BI service.
To support the Head of Business Intelligence Development and Head of Operational Business Intelligence in delivering Trust’s Business Intelligence strategic vision to streamline activities and focus on value-added goals, implementing a real-time corporate approach to intelligence, a single version of the truth, promoting a self-service and ease of access approach to data, exploring and utilising world-class technologies.
To develop and own a part of the Business Intelligence improvement plan and work with wider BI team colleagues and staff within Divisions to maintain and implement.
To work with colleagues in the wider BI team to inform developments of products to deliver the BI improvement plan, reduce manual or disjointed processes, such that service is value-added and not just provision of information.
Support the transformation into an exemplar organisation based on sound business intelligence, against a rigorous Performance Framework.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Expert-level SQL skills, including the ability to design and create tables, write highly efficient and complex queries, critically review and optimise existing SQL code, and develop stored procedures and functions to support reporting and data processing needs.
- Strong business analysis skills, with the ability to engage effectively with report area SMEs and other stakeholders to elicit, document and agree detailed reporting requirements and specifications.
- Experience developing SSIS packages for data loading, transformation and extraction, including producing datasets for national/regional submissions and internal reporting in Excel/CSV formats.
- Proven expertise in Power BI, including data modelling, DAX, Power Query, report/dashboard design and deployment, with the ability to deliver enterprise-grade self-service reporting solutions.
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric, including building and managing Fabric workspaces, lakehouses, dataflows and pipelines for end-to-end data orchestration and processing.
- Experience developing business applications using Microsoft PowerApps to support operational processes and data capture is desirable.
- Demonstrable experience in Excel for data analysis, reporting and the preparation of submission-ready datasets.
- Experience of working with multiple stakeholders at all levels, translating complex data and technical concepts into accessible, actionable intelligence.
- Proven ability to mentor and support colleagues within a technical BI environment.
Documentation & Knowledge Management
- Ensuring each completed piece of review, consolidation or development work is accompanied by clear technical documentation for reports, datasets, ETL/data pipelines and database objects — including data lineage, source-to-target mappings, transformation logic and refresh schedules — so that reporting solutions are fully documented, auditable and maintainable and handed over to the BAU BI team on completion.
- Maintain a data dictionary / metadata catalogue defining report measures, calculations and business rules consistently across the reporting suite, reducing the duplicate-definition problem the EPR review is meant to fix.
- Document business rules and report specifications agreed with report area SMEs, ensuring sign-off is captured and traceable. Support the development of the wider BI team's knowledge and technical skills through documentation, knowledge-sharing and on-the-job coaching as pieces of work are completed and transitioned into business-as-usual.
- Maintain change logs / version control for reports and underlying code as part of the review, consolidation and decommissioning process
- Contribute to or maintain a testing and validation log for the parallel-running/reconciliation work during the EPR transition (documenting what was checked, by whom, against what expected outcome)
